Default Ubuntu Dapper + 7800 GT > OpenGL doesn't work

Hello

It's my first post here.

2 years ago, I was using Ubuntu, then I switched to SuSE, for many reasons. Now that I see the improvements on Ubuntu, I want to use Ubuntu again.

So I first installed Dapper 64bits, but according to many dependencies problems I decided to go back to 32bits. All installation process goes well, also with nVidia drivers.

My nVidia 7800 GT, works perfectly on Windows and SuSE 10.1. But on Ubuntu, anything related to OpenGL/GLX makes the system to crash. I tested both nvidia-packages and the official nvidia .run drivers (manualy and with the automatic script), installation complete. But launching just a simple OpenGL screensaver induces crash. The strange thing is that in the nVidia Control Panel ("nvidia-settings"), just clicking on the OpenGL/GLX tab is also fatal.
And so is XGL/Compiz unusable. I tried many different options in the "xorg.conf", but nothing acts.

So I would like to know if someone found a solution...

Thank you very much and sorry if my English is bad...

I have a few questions:
0) Are you seeing this crash both with and without XGL?
1) Does this crash reproduce without the Composite extension?
2) I'd like to see a bug report which is generated after a crash, yet before starting X again.

Thanks,
Lonni

I'd try removing the binary driver and install the nvidia-glx and linux-restricted-modules package from apt/synaptic, this should provider the binary NVIDIA 1.0.8762 driver.

@ netllama :
0) Yes, I tried with XGL and crash after login. Now it's a fresh install with just nVidia related things installed, and even just a 3D GL sceensaver induces a crash.
1) Yes.
2) To do that, I suppose I have to boot in "recovery mode" without starting X? Because I have to reboot...

@ evilghost : I tried all possible drivers, each time on a fresh Ubuntu install : default, nvidia-glx, official .run, automatic script, automatix...

Now, I will crash Linux () and post the Log, as you asked.

xelios, yes, you'd have to boot to a runlevel which does not start X.

Additionally, please verify whether you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard.

Thanks,
Lonni

In looking at your bug report, I don't see any successful attempts to install the 1.0-8762 driver. Please (re)install the 1.0-8762 driver from the official package. If the problem persists, please generate and post a new bug report.

Additionally, please verify whether you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard.

Thanks,
Lonni

I tell you now what I did during the last hours...
  1. Bios upgrade.
  2. New install of Ubuntu Dapper 32bits.
  3. Dist upgrade (kernel and Co...).
  4. Installed "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run" regarding nvnews recommandations.
The driver install finished prefectly, but X still doesn't worked.
So I made a couple of tests, to go further, playing around with GLX and Composite in "xorg.conf".
Results :
  • # GLX + Composite enabled > OK
  • # GLX + Composite disabled > OK
  • GLX + Composite enabled > KO
  • GLX + Composite disabled > KO

The difference is now that X craches when it starts, without showing anything (graphic or text), just a black screen.

Now my "xorg.conf" is # GLX, and without anything relative to Composite.
Bug report attached.

Thank you very much for your help.

It looks like X is segfaulting when attempting to load the glx module:
######
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

*** If unresolved symbols were reported above, they might not

I followed these recommandations :

Quote:
* development tools like make and gcc are installed
* the linux-headers package matching the installed Linux kernel is installed
* the pkg-config and xserver-xorg-dev packages are installed
* the nvidia-glx package has been uninstalled with the --purge option and the file /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx does not exist.

If you use Ubuntu, please also ensure that the linux-restricted-modules packages have been uninstalled
And then used ubuntuforums' howto.

But I suppose you mean I have to set Option "RenderAccel" "0"?

You've verified that you have no /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx ? Was 1.0-8762 installed after that file was purged?

Yes, nvidia-glx was purged (and more, it was not installed before) then /etc/init.d/nvidia-glx removed (but didn't exist) and only after that I installed the driver.

Do you see something I made wrong?

Edit : Just tested Option "RenderAccel" "0", no change
