Default Deadlocks after upgrade to Athlon64 X2

Hi,

I did not find any threads that match my problem.

I had a set up of two 6600GTs in SLI with a Athlon64 3000+ cpu (Socket 939). This setup allowed me to run, with any issues UT2004 and other graphics heavy applications under just about any Vanilla kernel.

I upgraded the CPU to an Athlon64 X2 4800+, but now have the following major issue: With no cpu heavy applications running, I launch ut2004. I will be able to play it for some time without any problem until the operating system deadlocks. Sometimes the bots keep playing, but I have no control and cannot exit. Sometimes I get a few temporary freezes before it completely deadlocks.

If I set something to compile and launch ut2004, the system will deadlock almost immediatly.

Sometimes the system will deadlock when I am doing a cpu intensive task which in xorg and using nvidia drivers. I have not had any problems (and I have tested extensivly with an array of kernel options and kernels) when not running with Nvidia drivers. I have no issues when playing games when running Windows XP. Therefore this is unlikely a hardware problem.

By deadlock I mean it freezes to the degree that I cannot do anything but press the restart button; I can't ssh to the machine to look at my logs and see what happen.

So my question is such: How can a get a trace of the problem? Should I file a bug report?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log. You should also verify that you're using the latest BIOS.

Thanks,
Lonni

Hi!

By "deadlock in UT2004", you mean, you can still hear activities on the loud
speaker (even your own fire when pressing the button), but screen is
frozen? In this case, apply "idle=poll" as kernel boot option.

Other deadlocks on desktop level my disapear when applying "pci=conf1"
as kernel boot option: from what i know, this is actually only necessary
for certain dual CPU dual GPU multihead configurations, but maybe some
dual CPU dual GPU SLI configurations are also affected.

regards

Bernhard

I found the source of the problem:

Twin View...As soon as I disabled my second monitor in xorg.conf, I saw an increase in speed and have not had a deadlock despite plenty of "abuse".

I am using the latest bios.

netllama: Attached is nvidia-bug-report.log for Single monitor config...I'll get you dual montitor config a little later.

JaXXoN: No I can't control anything by pressing buttons. Sometimes the bots keep playing and I hear them play, other times everything freezes all together.
I will try pci=conf1 later.

Thanks for your replies.

I'd like to see a bug report from the configuration that produces the crash.

pci=conf1 does sound like a good test.

Thanks,
Lonni

TwinView.zip contains the log where I get the deadlocks.

You're not using TwinView in TwinView.zip, you're using two X screens across two videocards. Booting with pci=conf1 seems likely to fix this problem (and has been discussed in other threads).

I am happy to say that pci=conf1 has fixed all issues.

Thank you very much for your support.
