Default GeForce 6600 / Dual Screen / Ubuntu

Hello, all.

I got my dual screen setup working perfectly with the Nvidia driver under Ubuntu Dapper. Then the other day I ran an update and it changed the kernel and everything stopped working. It flickers for a minute when starting X and then throws up an error. No Nvidia logo. Over in the Ubuntu forums they told me that I needed to install the restricted packages and nvidia-glx, and after I did that stuff and it still didn't work tseliot told me to come over here.

I tried going back to a basic setup with just one screen for the sake of troubleshooting, but I ran this nvidia-bug-report with my dual screen xorg.conf file, because that used to work.

I'm really at my wit's end. Attached is my nvidia-bug-report.log

Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

In your bug report, I see:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA kernel module does not appear to be receiving
(EE) NVIDIA(0): interrupts generated by the NVIDIA graphics device.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please see the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS section in the
(EE) NVIDIA(0): README for additional information.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

I'd suggest you take a look at the README for further guidance. If upgrading the kernel is what triggered this problem, then you likely are hitting a kernel bug.

Thanks,
Lonni

I've looked at the README and the only advice it gives for this particular error is to move the card which isn't an option. Also, in the Ubuntu forum, they seemed to think it wasn't a kernel bug after I made sure that my restricted modules were installed and that I'd reinstalled nvidia-glx.

On a whim I tried adding irqpoll to my boot options. This was the solution to an earlier problem installing ubuntu itself from a live cd.

Poof. It worked. I don't know why. Someone here probably does. I'm happy.
