When I try to run cipher it says "'cipher' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"
What am I doing wrong? |

Are you running Windows XP Home, or Windows XP Media Center? I dont belive those support EFS
-Edit I just checked with my big blue Microsoft Press Windows XP Professional book and EFS is only supported in Pro/Server that is most likely the cause.

Had no idea this even existed. It looks like it is in XP as well. I can't see an option to overwrite deleted files though.

I mentioned this a while back in the useful software thread. I use it all the time to wipe free space.
I have no idea whether or not it wipes deleted filenames in the MFT however. The only tool I know of that did something like that was Sysinternals sdelete. But unfortunately it doesn't appear to fully support Win XP or dynamic disks. On a side note, Sysinternals was bought out by Microsoft. Good for Mark and Bryce, but I have a feeling the software being owned by M$ will turn to shyte now..

Indeed their servers were getting hammered when people first found out. Fortunately I had already grabbed the free utils and source code with HTTrack a few months ago and kept them updated ever since.
