Sonofa... I have XP Home and it won't work.

Bcwipe or Eraser. The free version of PGP Desktop also has a disk wiping utility and file shredder.

Do you recommend any one in particular? I've seen Eraser but it seems to want to integrate a little to tightly for my tastes. I'd prefer a program that I can just call up on demand, close out of any open software, and run it. Much like cipher.

I personally don't use any of them because I have a dynamic disk configuration. I'm not sure if any of those utilities fully support that and don't want to take the chance of corrupting my files. Which is why I use cipher.exe.

Just to let you know there is some risk associated with 3rd party programs. I lost a hard drive and everything that was on it and had to return it because it destroyed the boot sector and damage was unrecoverable

lowlevel format probably would have worked to fix that.

But low level format is not recovery software. Low level format can actually prevent recovery, data recovery that is.

Low level format, if done with proper tools, should restore the disk to factory state.

If it's physically damaged then thats a different story. I've personally never heard of physical damage from these sort of disk wiping tools. Though over time, the disk may die quicker because "wiping" makes the disk do a lot more work than normal.
