Hi, the driver installation for both my motherboard and video card have given my trouble.
OS: Gentoo Linux 2.6.17-gentoo-r4 Motherboard chipset: nForce 3 Video card: EVGA GeForce FX5500 When I try to install my motherboard drivers (sound and ethernet) it says it doesn't have a builtin kernel module, and will have to make one, I say OK, and then it says it failed, and tells me to look at the log (attached). When I try to install my video card drivers, similar situation, it fails and tells me to look at the log and come here for more information. If there is any more information I can give, just reply. -thx in advance |

Reboot to runlevel 3 so that it does not start X
(give the 3 as a boot option on the boot screen, or when it has booted to graphic mode do Ctrl-Alt-F1, login as root, and type: init 3 wait a few seconds, and then try the install again. |

I tried it again, without starting X, and it still has the same problem, the nforce driver complains about possibly not being compatible with the version of gcc i used to compile the kernel, and the graphics driver says that it thinks something else took control of my video card (rivafb, nvidiafb) even after i reconfigured the kernel and recompiled and tried again

What does the output from lsmod look like?
Does this problem reproduce with a kernel.org kernel? Does your kernel have any framebuffer console support? If so, I'd suggest rebuilding it without. |

I got it to work, I just grabbed an older kernel and the drivers installed fine.
still have a problem tho, I have no idea how to setup my old dualmonitor setup from when I used windows a while back, is there an easy way to do that, or do i have to do it the hard way and mess with xorg.conf myself |
