Default How to install Nvidia device driver during RHEL4 install

The normal RHEL4 install has problems with the Nvidia Quadro FX 3450 video
card. I have to do the install in text mode (not graphic) and when I
reboot off install the reboot hangs. Swapping in an Nvidia Quadro FX 4500
graphics card has no problems.

I downloaded from Nvidia's web site the device driver
(NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run) for the Quadro FX
3450 graphics board that came with the Precision 380.
I also downloaded from Dell's web site the device driver for the Quadro FX
3450 graphics board (dell-nvidia-8756-5dkms.i386.rpm). I burned both files
to the same CD.

I am using the Red Hat Linux install command "linux dd". This command
prompts for any device drivers needed during the install. When I am
prompted to put in the CD, neither file is recognized as a device driver.

Does anyone have any advice on how to procede? Thanks.

Tom

You cannot install the nvidia X driver during the OS installation. It can only be installed afterwards.

I don't fully understand what you mean by "when I reboot off install the reboot hangs.". Is the installer hanging after the installation has completed, or some other behavior?

Thanks,
Lonni

With the RHEL install I get as far as the sysem trying to reboot off the new hard drive OS. Normally, RH has some final configuration such as setting up a user account BUT in this case the reboot hangs with a gray screen. I never get to the new OS so I can't install the drivers.

That's an old 'nv' X driver bug. If you boot to runlevel 3, you won't have that problem.

Thanks,
