FreeBSD x GeForce 6600 troubles

I just upgraded my computer with the Ge Force 6600 card. And I tried NVIDIA driver (x86-1.0-6113) on my stable FreeBSD 4.10. Unfortunately, I faced with the big trouble - during attempt to start X Window, screen is being filled by the white strips and computer hangs up :-(

Can anybody help me?

The 1.0-6613 NVIDIA FreeBSD graphics driver release does not support the GeForce 6600 GPU, please use 1.0-8762. Be advised, however, that FreeBSD 5.3 or later are required by current graphics driver releases.

Yes, as I suspected. So, is there any way to solve a problem for my combination of FreeBSD and nvidia GPU? Is it OK to use "vesa" X Window gpaphic driver (found by experiments) for the GeForce 6600? Or it's better to use "nv" or "vga"?

And I have an another question. What can you say about risk level for the such a situation: normal GeForce GPU main/memory clock mode is 300/400 Mhz, but overclocked to 325/500?

You can use the vesa driver, but the nv driver is preferable as it supports your GPU directly and can take better advantage of the hardware (which translates to better performance, etc.). As to overclocking, neither the vesa nor the nv driver include thermal and/or dynamic clock management, so there's a higher chance of problems/damage to the GPU than with the nvidia driver.

I haven't tried any of the special nvidia drivers yet. But X hangs even when I use the nv driver in combination with a default 6.1 system.

I can use X for awhile. Then all of a sudden weird coloring appears before everything hangs and I have to hard-reset the system.

Why is this?

The card I have is a:

Asus Extreme N6600TOP SILENT/TD/256M


I hope it is a FreeBSD problem and so I can use X with some other system.

Why isn't FreeBSD capable of letting me shut down gracefully?
