Default no nvidia on realtime kernel CCRMA

Hello,

i know there's already a thread about this issue, but as a newbie i don't understand that.
I tried to get the nvidiadrivers going on 2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrma-i686. I had to tell the driver where it could find the source (--kernel-source-path /usr/src/kernels/2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrma-i686) and the driver did build. After this build however i got an error: unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'.
Help would be much apriciated.

Works fine, but you need to perform some handycrafts:

Get the realtime preemption patch for the nvidia kernel module

You also need to make sure the kernel source tree you're building against matches the running kernel exactly; judging from the nvidia-installer.log file, this isn't currently the case.

i'm afraid i did get lucky yet. As a superuser i performed

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run --extract-only
cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1/usr/src/nv
patch -p1 < ../../../../patch-nv-1.0-8762-rt.txt
make SYSSRC=/usr/src/kernels/2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrma-i686 install

but then it went wrong. The output generated is attached.
Zander is saying that 'You also need to make sure the kernel source tree you're building against matches the running kernel exactly; judging from the nvidia-installer.log file, this isn't currently the case' but i double-checked the installed versionnumbers and they seem the same.
For completenesssake i mention that i have two other kernels installed
In /boot there are
vmlinuz-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp
vmlinuz-2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrma
vmlinuz-2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrmasmp
vmlinuz-2.6.17-1.2174_FC5
vmlinuz-2.6.17-1.2174_FC5smp

I'm running a Pentium 4.
(It may well be that i'll have to try again in a year to get things the way i want it, this is not a thing for a (rather) newbie?)

Seems like building the kernel module was ok, but something
went wrong installing it.

I assume there is a file "nvidia.ko" in the build directory
/home/menno/downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1/usr/src/nv

Please check if it's also located in the modules directory
/lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrma-i686/kernel/drivers/video

If not, the copy the file manually from the build to the modules directory.

Finnaly run the depmod command as described and everything
should work fine.

there is no /lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrma-i686/kernel/drivers/video
but there are

/lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrma
/lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrmasmp

in /lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrma/kernel/drivers/video i see a nvidia.ko
but not in /lib/modules/2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrmasmp/kernel/drivers/video.
So i copied the build nvidia.ko from my /home in the smp-version too. This is correct i think because a have a Pentium voor, so i need the smp version.
However that that did not work at all, i was not able to boot into the smp-version at all.

(i tried both options 'depmod -a 2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrma' and 'depmod -a 2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrmasmp')

That means you actually have two real time kernels installed:
one for uni-processor systems and one for smp systems.
I guess you are running the smp kernel? What does "uname -a"
say?

If you have a Pentium with hyperthreading and/or mulitple cores, then
you should take the smp kernel.

I too have the planetccrma smp kernel (2.6.16-1.2080.16, but rdt rather rhan rrt.)

I followed the instructions in this thread and managed to succesfully applied the patch. However I can no longer use my laptop's native resolution of 1440x900, the best I can get is 1024x768. I tried adding a modeline and that didn't help either. Is there any reason I can't get 1440x900?

Also, am I correct the nv driver doesn't support 3D acceleration? Is there one that does?

Lastly, Menno, I have had issues with compiling packages against the rrt sources. I switched to the rdt kernel (I'm no even quite sure what the difference is between rdt and rrt, to be honest) and that seemed to improve things a little.

Update to last entry:
The patch got applied properly and compilation was successf, I'm not quite sure I ever got the nvidia driver to work at all. After make, install and depmod, I killed X and when it restarted, it was with the 1024x768 (not the desired 1440x900) resolution. I searched for a solution to this in the forums but didn't find anything close.

I rebooted and now the nvidia driver simply refuses to play ball. Changing to the nv driver works, albeit with the reduced resolution. I have since recompiled against the kernel sources and everything compiles as it should, but it doesn't work.

For sanity's sake, I checked that the driver built against the right kernel:

i have an error for you:

I had it after these commands:
cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1/usr/src/nv
make SYSSRC=/usr/src/kernels/2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrmasmp-i686 install

but i have to mention that i went back to the original Fedora5 and its older kernel. Then i installed the ccrma-smp kernel all over. However i saw it had a dependency on the ccrma NOT smp kernel too and installed that one too.

Because i started all over with a 'clean' system which of the following files is neccesary for installing the Nvidia-drivers (just to make sure this time)?
1. kernel-2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.src.rpm or/and
2. kernel-devel-2.6.16-1.2080.16.rrt.rhfc5.ccrma.i686?

Unlike martindupras i would like to try again - with your help of course.
