Thanks. You're both using the same MX3414. Unfortunately, I'm not able to locate one of these notebooks here.

As I was saying before, if you can locate a compaq v6000, it is precisely the same problem. Too late for me though, this piece of junk is going back to the store.

Actually, mine is an MX3410 but they do indeed look alike. I think these systems are fairly new; I don't see them listed on Gateway's site, but I can find information about my computer if I enter the serial number.

So, my question is, where do we go from here?

P.S. Thank you for all the help so far. I am glad to see that nVidia is providing this kind of service to indirect customers.

I believe that i've reproduced this problem on a different C51 GPU based notebook. The good news is that the problem will be fixed in the first 1.0-9xxx series driver.

Before anyone asks, I'm afraid that I don't have a release date for that driver, other than to say that it will not be in the near future.

Thanks,
Lonni

Thanks, Lonni. I can wait for the nVidia driver; the "nv" driver will suffice for now. I'm just glad to know that it will be fixed someday. Now if only I can get my sound card (also nVidia) to work. I'm having a similar problem, actually: the hardware is recognized and it looks like it should work, but no output. But that's another thread...

Thumbs up Re: GeForce Go linux drivers

I have the same problem and I managed to install the drivers for the Gateway MX3410. (most of them )

I hope this works.

This is very disappointing considering this card is in many of the notebooks I'm seeing on the shelf right now. I thought I was buying an mx3414 too, the irony being that I recognized Nvidia's reputation for linux support... guess not? I'd have expected a bug like this would get a little more attention than "not in the near future."

I'm considering buying a laptop with a Geforce Go 6100 in it (this week), but after reading this thread I'm a bit concerned.

When you say, "not in the near future", when roughly do you mean by that? I have an nVidia card in my desktop machine, and it works great with everything I need it to, and I was hoping I could go with nVidia for my laptop too.

netllama, if 1.0-9xxx is going to be much more of a wait is there any chance of getting another 1.0-8xxx release to address this?

I've since gone with something that has a Go 7300 (great, no problems) thanks to this thread, but I'm still curious what the problem is with this one particular card (6100, 6150 or whatever)? What is it's deal?

Like I said, I bought a Gateway MX3412 a few days ago and it's been really good so far. Last night I installed Linux and I've been using the "nv" driver instead of the full fledged nvidia one. I had more issues with getting my Wireless Network working than with the video, I must admit.

Right now I'm trying to fix my 1280x800 resolution, and from there we'll see if I have to revisit this thread. It kinda sucks to know that new video drivers won't be out for an indefinite amount of time. I'd like a rough guestimation if anything.

I saw someone else had a compaq v6000 in this thread, so I'm cross posting here about a sound issue (see: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=76807 ) since the 6150 driver issue will be resolved with in the next driver series.

Basically, it looks like sound is detected properly in FC5 (running 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5), but I'm getting an error on the snd driver when trying to actually play anything (module loaded is snd-hda-intel). It's listed as an MCP51 in the soundcard detection tool... See the linked thread for details. Anyone else seen this?
