Hi, I'm experiencing the old screen frozen mouse moves bug. After the mouse moving for sometime the machine usually crashes completely (even the mouse doesnt move). I have the following specs:
Ubuntu 6.06 using kernel 2.6.15-26-386 i compiled the nvidia module using gcc (GCC) 4.0.3 (Ubuntu 4.0.3-1ubuntu5) (i tried with gcc 3.4 but the installer told me i should build using the same version of gcc as the kernel was built). some information about cpu: Code:
$ cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 6 model : 8 model name : AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2100+ stepping : 1 cpu MHz : 1733.722 cache size : 256 KB fdiv_bug : no hlt_bug : no f00f_bug : no coma_bug : no fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 1 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 mmx fxsr sse syscall mmxext 3dnowext 3dnow bogomips : 3470.44 My card is this: Inno 3d G-Force FX 5200 128mb I already tried using nvagp 0, 1, etc. I tried compiling the module using 4x instead of 8x, I tried many combinations but i still get the bug. Im also using the latest driver version (1.0-8762) Is there some light to solve this bug ? Thank you |

Please generate and provide an nvidia-bug-report.log after reproducing this problem.
Thanks, Lonni |

Ok, so I managed to crash it by running glxgears and moving the window around while it was running. I tried several 3d screensavers before that (xscreensaver-gl). The problem seems to occur more frequently when in 3d action, but sometimes also with 2d operations. As the machine crashed, i rebooted and ran nvidia-bug-report.sh before X started (in a recovery terminal).
I've attached to the zip file the following: nvidia-bug-report.log nvidia-installer.log xorg.conf Xorg.0.log |

Just if it helps, i ran the bug-report tool again after X started (but before problems happening, as the machine becomes unusable after the problem).

RussyB, I have a few questions:
0) Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard? 1) If you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf does that have any impact? 2) If you boot with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters, does that have any impact? whitesuit, I have a few questions: 0) Does this problem persist with a more recent kernel (2.6.17.x)? 1) Have you tried reducin the AGP rate in the BIOS? 2) Does setting RenderAccel to false in xorg.conf have any impact? 3) If you boot with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters, does that have any impact? 4) If you're feeling adventerous there's a beta BIOS available for your motherboard, that might be worth testing. Thanks, Lonni |

I even tried booting with agp=off and using nvagp, but no go also. Just on a side note: The nv (open source driver has never crashed on me, though i get poor speed compared to the propietary driver using this). Something I've noticed, might be nothing but.. In my nvidia-installer.log (attached in the first zip) i have: Code:
include/asm/bitops.h:326: warning: comparison between signed and unsigned
In file included from include/linux/list.h:7,
from include/linux/wait.h:23,
from include/asm/semaphore.h:41,
from include/linux/sched.h:20,
from include/linux/module.h:10,
from /home/cassio/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1/usr/src/nv
/nv-linux.h:51,
Code:
(II) Configured Mouse: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0xf09210a4, 0x0000d398, 0) (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0xf09210a4, 0x0000d398, 0) (WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0xf09210a4, 0x0000d3a8, 0) |

wait.h is unrelated to the WAIT errors in your X log. I'd still advise testing a newer kernel. There's nothing stopping you from going back to the official kernel afterwards.
Thanks, Lonni |

I will try. I'd like also to ask, is there a distribution which seems to best behave with the nvidia driver?

Gentoo is nice for doing that as well, and doesn't involve having to work around things too much like you do in Ubuntu. On the other hand, I like Ubuntu more. I like being able to quickly install updates to software. |

Gentoo is nice but it gives you too much work that a desktop computer shouldn't bring you. The problem with the default drivers (nv) is that their speed when using AA or 3d applications is very poor.
