Thumbs down Dual core AMD 3800+, SLI ASUS 7600 GT x2, X Windows lockup with smp kernel

Hi guys,

I just installed new AMDx2 3800+ CPU and I'm expiriencing problems with my configuration. The system spec is :

MB: ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
CPU: AMDx2 3800
VGA: 2x ASUS 7600GT
System: Fedora Core 5 with 2.6.17_1.2174_FC5smp kernel and
kmod-nvidia-smp-1.0.8762-5.2.6.17_1.2174_FC5 from livna.org

Three monitors are connected to the system, two on the first card and two on the second card. The screens are connected through Xinerama.

When I boot the system with smp kernel, after a while the whole X windows freezes. I can move the mouse sporadicaly but the keyboard is not responding as well as any other application. I tried moving the mouse pointer from one to another screen but that failed too. The pointer comes to the edge of the screen and stays there.

If I boot the system wit single cpu kernel everything works fine and there are no problems.

The last time the system crashed I was able to log through SSH from another machine. Everything was working fine so it looks like that only X had froze.

Anyhow I found and copied the following lines from the kernel logs:

I have no experience with fedora core5, but did you follow this:

If not that might be the cause of the issues.

I just checked that post. I have selinux disabled and all required packages installed.

The problem is that the drivers are working perfectly if I use single CPU kernel. However if I use the SMP kernel the problem arises.

Does the problem go away if you boot with the pci=nommconf kernel parameter?

Hm I just added the param to the kernel boot line and it looks like it's working.

The system is up for 10 minutes like now and it has no problems so far. In my previous attempts it did manage to hold this long. I'll keep on working for the next few hours and if any problem arises I'll post it to the list.

If it's not trouble to you could you please explain me what the pci=nommconf parameter did.

The pci=nommconf kernel parameter disables the MMCONFIG PCI configuration space access method, which forces the kernel back to PCI type 1 configuration accesses. The MMCONFIG access method appears to be severely broken on a number of systems; on such systems, the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver can't reliably access the PCI configuration space of NVIDIA devices, which results in various stability problems, particularly if multi-core CPUs are used with multiple GPUs.

Hm just when I hoped everything was alright another problem occured.

If I try to log out my user from the current X session the computer freezes and just restarts. I repeated this action several times and the result is the same.
If I just shutdown the PC then there is no problem at all.

I guess that the problem is that X windows restarts before it allows another user to log in.

Any ideas ?

I'll try to repeat the sitation few more times and check for info in syslog.

I'm unable to log on to the PC from remote host when error happens. So the generated log file contains only data when the X server is running.

To reproduce all I have to do is to log out the current user. And that happens every time I try to log out. Then the system hangs and in about 5 to 10 secs it restarts. The info that I found in the system logs is the one that I posted earlier.

If I go to text console while the system is in runlevel 5 and I issue an init 3 command the system will go to runlevel 3 and everything is ok. If I issue init 5 after that the X will be started. Only if I try to log out the system hangs.

I'm using KDE as desktop and the system is with all updates installed.

Does this also reproduce if you set vag=normal instead of vga=0x318 (and reboot)?
Does the hang occur only when using both videocards in X?
