Default [solved] Geforce 4 TI 4200 (64MB RAM) Hardware Problem?

Hello,

I own a GeForce 4 Card that has done a long and reliable service for about 5 years. At the beginning of this week the Linux bootup stoped after starting the X server, with the monitor going out, and the keyboard locked.
After reverting from the installed 1.0.8xxx drivers to the open source nv drivers, X fired up nicely and no problems (exept no 3d) so far.
Even framebuffer is working normaly.

The odd thing now is if I fire up Windows with the Nvidia drivers then I see the same Login does not apear, instead Monitor goes in standby and keyboard locked.
If running in save mode, Windows comes up nicely. (no 3d Accelation either.)

I would like to know if my suspicion that the 3d Accelator chip broke is correct, or could there be another HW - Part causeing this behaviour.

(I exclude software failure since it effects Windows and Linux at the same time)

thanks.

Sorry I dont know How to do that.

As soon X starts machine locks up 100%. No Information on Monitor nor keyboard working. I need to do a HW based reset to be able to do anything.

I did not try a remote access, but I have an idea how to organise the ability.

Would it be usefull if I make the log with the nv drivers enabled if remote does not work out?

thanks for the help!!

Hmm, most points adress SMP or x64 problems.
Got an AMD 2000XP + which is neither of those. Complete HW is from the technical side 5 years old. (exept the motherboard. Had to replace it recently (2 month) after a breakdown of the computers powersupply)

My kernel is 2.6.16, Graphic drivers are NVIDIA-1.0.8xxx
Xorg version was 6.8.? Now its 7.0
Update was done after update of Xorg (hopeing that would solve the Problem / had to do it anyways...)

Distro is Gentoo.

Thanks the tipp. I apreciate the help.
I will see first if I can organise that logfile.

I'll be back

[edit]
Did not see anything in the xorg log output. Will try with higer debug output.

no luck with produceing a nvidia bug log with the nvidia and x in place.
Ill try, to play with the configuration in Xorg to get it somehow up. But I do not have a lot hope.

I can produce a nvidia bug report with the nv drivers.
But the log seems very incomplete.
I.E.: the Nvidia Bios is shown as ?????
I am unsure if thats normal for nv drivers.

Thats just as a short update. Ill be back tomorrow with more stuff.

You should generate a bug report against the nvidia X driver. If the system hangs, then generate the bug report after rebooting, yet before starting X again.

Thanks,

This is embarrassing. I found out what the Problem is. I transportet my Tower some weeks ago. After arriving at the destination I checked for any loosend parts but not close enough it seems. What I did not see was that one smaller Rambars loosend itself somehow and was only halfway in its socket (You do not see it is loosend if looking from above. Only when touching it you know it does not sitt right) I just recognized due to the research that the Memory is missing. I looked Closer at the Issue and corrected refitted the memory chip.
So something within the board must have triggered the Crash and it was not Graficcard related Issue.

I have nevertheless made a nvidia bug report (with an X server running against nvidia drivers). I did not see any bugs. However can I send the report in for a quick glance in case I missed anything?

Thanks for your help, and sorry for the inconveniance for bugging on this thread

Cheers
Peter
