Default Loaded Nvidia Drivers, X flashes and crashes when starting

Ok, I'm trying to get openGL working on this linux box here and I have having problems.

I have a GeForce4 Ti 4600 card. I'm running redhat 9 as well. uname -r shows 2.4.20-6. I downloaded the linux driver set (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run), ran the install, which went fine.

I made sure my XF86Config file had nvidia as the video driver, load gfx, got rid of dri, everything the readme said essentially.

Then I try startx, and it flashes the nvidia logo and then goes back to terminal. If I comment out the load glx in the XF86Config file X starts up, but of course gl doesn't work.

I've attached an nvidia bug report and the X log file. I've searched the forum extensively for other posts but with no success.

nvidia-bug-report.log

XFree86.0.log

Any help will be much appreciated.

Did you enable interrupts for your video card in the system bios?

How do I enabled interrupts for the video card? I looked in the bios and didn't really see anything like that.

@dhamilton: does this problem still reproduce if you install the latest RedHat 9 glibc updates and reinstall the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver? If so, does installing with the --force-tls=classic command line option help?

I don't know. Check the manual. I just saw that no IRQ is listed for the video in the IRQ list.

@sphincter: the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver checks if an IRQ was allocated to the GPU(s) it detects when it's first loaded. In this case, it looks like the problem is unrelated to IRQ allocation and/or interrupt delivery; rather, it appears that X crashes when the GLX extension module is initialized, which typically points to problems with the TLS libraries.

@zander: yeah, I caught that GLX was the last thing initialized befor the crash. But since I can't look at the code for the driver , I had to guess at root cause. The first thing I spotted was that his video card doesn't show in /proc/interrupts, so I thought that might be what caused it to fail.

@sphincter: that is expected, the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver's kernel module doesn't request the IRQ from the Linux kernel until the device in question is actually used, i.e. not until X is started and only as long as one NVRM client is running. So you won't see an nvidia entry in /proc/interrupts in this case. Since all this logic is Linux specific, it is implemented in the open-source shim layer shipped with the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver.

@zander: thanks! I didn't know that.

I am experiencing this also on a LinuxFromScratch system that I upgraded last evening to 8774 and 7.1. The pointer to it possibly being threading-related is a big help. I will do a little more troubleshooting.

Everything was working fine on 8762 and 7.0 before the upgrade.

Thanks for getting the 7.1 support out. It's much appreciated.

Further update: Reenabling the "load glx" in order to debug the problem resulted in the problem not recurring. I have booted the system several times and run several OpenGL apps. I have no explanation for this. Maybe it needed a good night's sleep. Maybe it is some other bug, or a timing issue.

the -classic option results in it starting with a black screen , and then the monitor goes into powersave mode. Then it just hangs out there and dosen't do anything? It never flashes the nvidia logo. Also, I looked at the Xfree86 log file, and it stops logging at the initialized extension GLX part.

I updated the glibc, reinstalled the nvidia drivers, and the same result happened.

Any other suggestions?
