Question X crashes, black screen (video signal still there), and have to shutdown and power up

Hello!

Within the last five days or so, I noticed my Debian X.org crashed into blackness (my Samsung SyncMaster 763MB light still shows video signal). I am not sure if I am having an ASUS NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 (128 MB of RAM; AGP) video card problem, setup problem, heat problem, etc. I already tried recompiling the NVIDIA and the latest one from yesterday or two days ago.

When my X crashes, I get nothing on my screen. I can't even get back to console/text mode (ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-alt-backspace, etc.). Even my keyboard lights do not seem to respond. I have to restart my Linux via SSH with shutdown command. I see nothing odd that show me what caused the crash. http://alpha.zimage.com/~ant/temp/xlog.txt (294 KB). Here's my ps aux list after a crash:

I can reboot just fine, but rerunning X again (startx; I setup Debian boot to text mode/console, not X) will freeze in blackness or stuck in KDE splash screen. Also, my CPU goes crazy (keeps climbing up to like 6 -- didn't let it go higher) and I can feel lags/freezes/pauses via SSH sessions:

I have to shutdown the whole computer (PSU doesn't need to be off) and power back on (reset my hardwares?). Once again, I can go back to Linux without problems. Then, I can startx without any problems. So far, I only had this problem twice so it might happen again. Is there a way to check my video card temperature like in Windows' NVIDIA drivers?

My machine specification (Linux/Debian/secondary box) can be read here: http://alpha.zimage.com/~ant/antfarm.../computers.txt ... Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Lonni, I attached two logs. One was normal usage before the crash, and one after the crash. Now, I must go shut down my box and power back on to fix this. Grr!

Default Re: X crashes, black screen (video signal still there), and have to shutdown and power up

I don't really see anything in the bug reports that suggests an nvidia driver bug.

I have a few questions:
0) Does this reproduce with a more recent kernel (2.6.17.x)?
1) Does this reproduce if the VMWare kernel modules are not loaded?
2) Does this reproduce if you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf ?
3) Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?
4) Have you verified that your RAM isn't faulty?

Thanks,
Lonni

0) That is going to be difficult since I have no disk space to upgrade my Kernel:
$ df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 270969 177469 79044 70% /
tmpfs 518196 0 518196 0% /dev/shm

/dev/hdb5 5336664 418952 4646620 9% /storage

1) I was able to remove vmmon, but not vmnet:
# rmmod vmnet
ERROR: Module vmnet is in use
Any ideas how to remove it? I am not a Linux expert so...

2) I added Option "NvAGP" "0" ... Example:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Generic Video Card"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "NvAGP" "0"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
Modes "1152x864"
EndSubSection

3) and 4) I haven't had problems before this week. In fact, I had 30+ days of uptime! The only thing is might had affected this upgrading. I upgrade with apt-get update and upgrade every day. I do remember seeing some xlib or xorg updates recently. I am not sure if those caused it? If it is a RAM probelm, wouldn't I see other problems. Interesting, I just noticed my swap file issue in top and hence why .xsessions-error mentioned it: Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 105160k cached

But I have it, why isn't my Linux using it?

Without vmmon module and NvAGP at zero, I can still reproduce the problem. I did find a way to easily reproduce the problem. In Pan v0.14.2.91, I read alt.binaries.ipod.videos.movies headers (15K downloaded). Scroll down and then the black screen!

Is there a way to test this outside of Debian? Can I use KNOPPIX to test? However, it doesn't use the NVIDIA driver so it isn't the same and I am pretty sure it doesn't have Pan with it.

OK, I fixed my swap file. I must had accidently put swap file during Debian's net-install a few months ago. Now, it is a swap partition. However, that doesn't help with my black screen problem. [sighs]

Interesting. I tried resetting my KDE back to defaults (renamed .kde/ and .kderc). I was able to reproduce the problem.

I decided to try Gnome instead of KDE. Gnome worked and I see the problem. Corrupted texts! See the attached screen shot. I think this is what causing the crash.

It sounds like a software problem, but X crashes so hard and I have to power off the system to fix my X? I don't think it is heat either because I turned the box off for 15 minutes, powered back on, and still crashes (reproduced).

I forgot to mention I did use older drivers too with the same problem.

I don't see any attached screenshots here. I'd also like to see a bug report generated while the text is corrupted.

Thanks,
Lonni

IOK, attached the NVIDIA log and some other logs.

The newsgroup threads (not even reading a thread -- just the list) that crashes are:

I forgot to note that the first time I had this problem was when I was looking, configuring, and previewing Xscreensaver. I don't remember which one it was and I can't seem to find it.

Weird. I was reproducing the crashes for Pan mailing list about the garbled texts that is causing this nasty crash in KDE v3.5.4 and not GNOME. I did a shutdown -h now because it always fixed the problem. It was off for maybe a minute or two. I powered back on, I heard a beep that I always hear when booting up my computer. Then, another beep again. I think it rebooted or something. After I got back into Linux/Debian console (I always use startx to run X), X frozed again. That's new. Maybe power off doesn't always work to fix the problem.

Also, for kicks and to double check. I recompiled the latest NVIDIA driver. No help.
