Default driver crashing machine

Hi all,

Using the nvidia module (8774, previous versions exhibit same failure) is causing complete lockups as soon as X is started on my machine.

I've tried all combinations of the NvAGP option, still creates a guaranteed lockup.

When using the "nv" module the lockup doesn't occur, however, the system is required to run accelerated applications.

Also, as an attempt to fix the problem i installed xorg 7.1, all went fine but still having exactly the same problems as with previous version.
Adding various things to the kernel boot options, as mentioned in other posts describing simular problems also yielded no success.

nvidia-bug-report, xorg.conf, kernel.config, Xorg.0.log all here:
http://ontheplayground.co.uk/~james/nvidia_logs/

System Info:
Asus P4S533 VX
Intel Pentium 4 2.00Ghz
Gefore 6800 Ultra

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

According to your X log, the hang is here:
#######
(II) LoadModule: "freetype"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/fonts/libfreetype.so
#######

That module shouldn't have anything to do with the nvidia X driver. Is the hang always at that same point?

Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?

Thanks,
Lonni

Lonni,

Thanks for your response

I think that the Xorg.0.log i provided was old and inaccurate, so I deleted /var/log/Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old, started X again, it crashed. On reboot no log files were present.

Checking now for the possibility of a new bios version.

Just updating...
fixed the main problem of Xorg crashing all the time. It was due to me thinking that running "X" would use my xorg.conf without me specifying -config. 0.o

Although everything seems to be working fine, i notice that /proc/drivers/nvidia/agp/status still says "disabled"

Any help would be appreciated

I don't see any obvious reason why AGP is failing. If you remove NvAGP from xorg.conf, does that help at all?
