Hi everybody.
I'm italian so my english will be very poor, i'm sorry for this I'm using Ubuntu dapper with kernel 2.6.15-26-386 and all updates with a nvidia 6600GT PCI-E on a Asus P5N32SLI-DELUXE with nvidia Nforce4 SLI intel ed and CPU INTEL P4 prescott 3Ghz. For the videocard i've installed the latest drivers from your site. My system is stable and I can play some games but I experienced some problems of rendering and fps. I explain them below: 1) The rendering problem is very strange, i see all writes in the game as small squares. It happens with armagetron (after playing 1 or 2 levels, not before) and chromium (from the beginning). It happens ONLY at fullscreen. If i reduce in window all sems ok. 2) The fps problem happens in UT2004... the game runs slow! In WINXP on the same machine I can set the game at max details and I play very well. In LINUX on large views the game did only 7 - 8 frames at 1024x1280 medium detail (in windows 50 - 60 and more) 3) When I run the utility nvidia-settings i get these error messages: ERROR: NV-CONTROL extension not found on this Display. ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA GPUs on ':0.0'. ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA Frame Lock Devices on ':0.0'. I attach mu xorg.conf, I hope this helps. Best regards and thanks for your help. F3uA |

I think you should have used drivers from your distribution.
You can search this forum how to do it. Attach nvidia-bug-report.

I have a similar problem with a 6600GT and the latest stable driver (8774): ET is unplayable when I see smoke and players, Quake 3 is bearly playable and Quake (Darkplaces) too (but they both lag too). But sometimes, some models disappear. I did not had such an issue in the 8762 version.
Edit, I confirm: I reinstalled the 8762 version and ET worked again, and Darkplaces does not hide some models anymore. The problem is 8774. If you want more info, ask me what you want.

I Just want to understand why nvidia-settings don't work and why the gpu is very slower than in windows. Then you suggest me to change the driver with the older? |

I think i have the same/very much alike problem with my nvidia card as you describe in number 1. I'm using a FX5600. My dist is Xubuntu and i'm using kernel 2.6.15-27-k7. I used the ubuntu glx drivers at first and it worked and then i updated to 8774 and now it doesn't work... It won't help to switch back either :S But if i start the game at windowed mode and runs it like that for like 1 min or so and then switch over to full screen the problem doesn't seem to apear :S |

I FOUND THE PROBLEM!!!
Perhaps you think i'm stupid and perhaps i really am... The problem is XGL! I installed XGL and all works fine, but i've changed some line in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom I commented the lines, restarted gdm (brutal kill) and all works done! It's fantastic 100 frames in ut2004! Really fantastic! But I cant understand why changing some options in gdm the sistem goes very slow... Xgl runs correctly but all applications are a lot slower, with artifacts and nvidia-settings doesnt work. is there a method to run all without slowing down the games? |

Sure you can play opengl/sdl games under Xgl without any significant impact on performance.
Open up console, type "export DISPLAY=:0" and then run your game from it. [tpg@localhost ~]$ export DISPLAY=:0 [tpg@localhost ~]$ et

Sorry I didn't see the reply before... huge thanks, it works perfectly!
It's a bit slower than with a normal session (no xgl) but it works great. Now I still have the fullscreen problem... X @ 1024x1280, game at 800x600 and I see the black sides and the game in a small central square. It's the last thing, then it's all working fine. |
