Unhappy Nvidia Driver will not start

I'm using a GEforce DDR 256 card running under Ubuntu Dapper. I've installed the 7174 legacy driver, but get the following message:

dmesg | grep NVIDIA
[17179598.724000] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
[17179598.740000] NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-7174 Tue Mar 22 06:44:39 PST 2005

glxinfo | grep direct
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".

I've looked at the log file and it looks like the GLcore module isn't loading. I realise there are a lot of people out there who've had similar problems. However, since I'm a newbie and don't quite know what to do, I'm hoping that someone can give me a step by step solution.

Thanks in advance

Be sure to instruct X to load the glx module via your X configuration file's Modules section. Please also see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678 and, if applicable, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72490. Please also note that the current NVIDIA Linux legacy graphics driver release is 1.0-7182.

I'll check those two sites but as far as I can tell, the glx module should be loading. I've posted my xorg.conf file.

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Here is my /var/log/xorg.0.log. I'm wondering if dapper is using a file other than /etc/X11/xorg.conf to load items.

You're using the Xorg nv driver and GLX extension module. Please install the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver and configure it as documented in the README.

The nvidia graphics driver is installed. I used a script file done by an individual on the ubuntu forum for that purpose. I'm wondering if ubuntu is looking at a different xorg.conf file rather than the one posted above.

Are the Device line and Identifier line the same in the configuration file?
Are they the same as what lspci says?

What's lspci? Bear in mind I'm a complete novice at this. I need things spelled out in words of one syllable!

The X11 server appears to be using a xorg config file located in /
and not the one in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

(==) Using config file: "//xorg.conf"

Thought that might be the case as I've discovered several xorg.conf files in several different directories. i.e.

/etc/X11
/usr/share/xresprobe
/root
/

How can I tell which one of these files the ubuntu is "looking" at and if its not "looking" at the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (as I suspect), how can I get it to do so?

I'll try editing the one in the / directory and see what happens.

X traditionally uses /etc/X11/xorg.conf by default. However, if you have an xorg.conf in your $HOME, it will use that one. I'd suggest deleting all except for /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Thanks,
Lonni

I'll try the suggestion, but I have another problem (hopefully the last one). I can get the nvidia driver to run, but when I type "glxinfo | grep direct" the screen resets, and I get the nvidia logo and then the ubuntu login screen. The same thing happens when I try to change the screensaver in the preferences section. Any Idea what's going on? I've included my current xorg.conf file below:
