Default hd problems - resolution and overscan

i have a geforce 6200 (VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 6200 (rev a1)) and i've been having all sorts of problems with tv out. i can get it to work, but it's not great.

my setup:
gentoo linux
geforce 6200
xorg 7
nvidia kernel and glx 8762
connected via component out to my sony 34" widescreen crt tv

i have two issues:
1) very obvious overscan issues, however the tvoverscan option has no effect. there is also no overscan slider in nvidia-settings (do i need to start it a special way?).

2) screen resolution. i have been able to get 720p to work, however 1080i fails no matter what i try.

any advice/help? i'm lost!
