I'm using a 3D Fuzion Geforce 6200 PCI card in a Dell Dimension 2400 (only has PCI slots...). I'm getting random freezes when running OpenGL applications, e.g. google earth and screen savers. This is with fedora core 4 and 8774 driver (also tried a little earlier driver). Usually it is a soft lockup where the machine recovers after a few seconds, but occasionally it locks hard. So far I'm just using the xorg.conf generated automatically by the driver. The only clues I see are "NVRM: Xid..." and "BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!" in /var/log/messages. Kernel is recent: 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4. BIOS is most recent (A05) and I have tried swapping the stock Dell power supply with a 400W unit (no effect). The machine is a dual boot, no problems noticed in widows running google earth or directX games. My nvidia-bug-report.log is attached -- any suggestions would be appreciated.

Does this problem persist if you boot with the acpi=off and/or noapic kernel parameters?
Thanks, Lonni |

I edited grub.conf and added acpi=off which resulted in the message "Failed to initialize the GLX module;" in Xorg.0.log. The glx module did load... Google earth runs, but with opengl software emulation (very slow).

Disabling acpi support has no connection to the glx X module. It sounds like your NVIDIA driver installation is broken. Please post a new bug report if you need further assistance.
Thanks, Lonni |

Well I have no explanation why glx failed to initialize. Moving forward, I reinstalled the nvidia driver and left acpi=off. The problem remains, both soft and hard lockups. A new bug report is attached.

I'm afraid that I don't have any other suggestions, and I don't have one of these Dell systems here to attempt to reproduce this problem.
