Default Problems with Dell Precision M50 display in SuSE 10

I have a Dell Precision M50 laptop (service tag# 1HZ3N21). I am loading it with SuSE 10.0 desktop. I successfully update all the packages with Yast Online pdate services. Once I go into the 3d effects control panel item and update the Nivida drivers and Xgl packages then restart the video system by logging off then back on. When the new driver start up my display does what is in the attached picture. Once it does this I can not get the display back to normal.

I have also tried it with an external 17" CRT monitor connected. Both displays show the same thing until the NVidia graphic driver loads the laptop's internal LCD screen shuts off and only the CRT displays but the odd rainbow and replication effect is gone.

I have also tried it with an external 15" LCD monitor and the same thing happens that happened with the external 17" monitor.

Thanks for nay help provided,

Dion

Definalty now appears to be a problem when the nvidia driver loads. I just rebuilt my laptop from scratch after delteing the partitions. I then installed the latest driver from the nvidia site NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8774-pkg1.run using the instructions I found on Novell's cool solutions http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/17174.html . The same problem apears once I load the graphical system with the new driver.

You're running X at 1024x768, instead of your display's native resolution of 1400x1050. There's no xorg.conf in your bug report, and you're running off of what looks like a temporary xorg.conf in /tmp/sax2-4550/xorg.conf.

I'd suggest configuring X to run at the native 1400x1050 resolution.

Changing to 1400x1050 doesn't change the problem at the right edge and bottom of the display. The highest I seem to be able to set my display resolution to with out moving element of the desktop off the screen is 1280x1024. I don't know why the system would be running from some sort of tempory xorg. I have mostly used default setups from installing SuSE Enterpise Desktop directly off the install DVD from Novell.

Thanks
Dion

I need to see a bug report which captures you running at 1400x1050.

Thanks,
Lonni

I had some problems with the res set at 1400x1050 like parts of the desktop dropping out and the systems locking up but after a couple of reboots the 1400x1050 res is workng but with the same rainbow on the right side and repeat of the top of the screen at the bottom.

According to your bug report, you're running 1280x1024, not 1400x1050:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1280x1024"

I'd suggest removing the 1400x1050 modeline from your xorg.conf, testing with the 1.0-9625 driver, and if the problem persists, please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and then generate and attach a new bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni

I do'nt know why the bug report log says that the display is running at 1280x1024 but the settings in the system control panel and the system try both indicated the res was running at 1400x1050.

Removing the 1400x1050 modeline from xorg.conf didn't seem to make any difference.

I also tried installing the Nvidia 1.0-9625 driver. That only coused even more sever problems. Once I installed the new driver I attemptted to run "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia". The laptop went to a blank screen and didn't return. I cold rebooted the laptop ande booted into failsafe mode where I attempted to configure though the text version of yast. I again got the same blank screen. I eventually gave up and reinstalled the 1.0-8774 version of the drivers.

I'm not clear on what you mean by "system control panel and the system". X is running 1280x1024.

I can't comment on the problem with 1.0-9625 without seeing a bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni
