And it works with an older driver release?

I can confirm this using Gentoo, Kernel 2.6.24.4 and KDE 3.9.5 on a GF6600GT (AGP).
Worked fine with (at least) all previous 1xx.xx.xx releases.

Just a guess:
Maybe this is caused by (rushed?) internal changes for the driver to comply with the Kernel 2.6.25+ constraints.
If that's right I fear this will be on the _very_ low priority list for reimplementation of this feature (read - will never happen),
similar to the situation of xvmc support of GF8+ (but this doen't hit work experience that much).

The "funny" part:
Not even buying one of the new cards will improve the situation concerning 2D performance.
It's getting ridiculous.

Cheers

Please post a bug report, a copy of ~/.fonts.conf, and a screenshot of the text that is not being antialiased.

I'm sorry for this one. Got the topic wrong.
Fonts are properly antialiased in my case but acceleration is gone.

I switched back to 171.06 - now it's fast again.
[OT] Would be nice to have some feedback concerning the speed issue though.

Thanks!

Okay, thanks for reporting this. I managed to reproduce the problem and filed bug 415425. You can work around this problem for now by enabling the glyph cache as described in the sticky posts.

I wonder is there any kind of testing performed on the drivers before they go out to beta-testing? Because I wonder how such a radical bug which affects useability on a lot systems can be overseen.

I just now from Sun that even they early-evaluation builds (pre-alpha) have high quality criteria, and its really hard to get things into them that are more than one-liners. (reviews, you have to write regression tests....).

Wouldn't be automatic regression tests a good thing for the nvidia drivers?
This way they would e.g. not break the OpenGL pipeline of Java again, although Sun already mailed NVidia a regression-testsuite which checks wether the driver fullfills any requirements needed.
