Default 1.0-9625 - screen stays black (tried nearly everything)

Hi there,

as the title of this posting implies, i have the "screen stays black" problem with the 1.0-9625 driver... My machine does not freeze completely, as i can reboot it by blindly typing in "reboot"...

What happens when i start Xorg:
-The screen switches black... Sometimes its all black, and sometimes i get a non-blinking cursor at the top left edge
-When i re-enable the nvidia-logo on Xorg startup, i get a white screen with some garbled color artifacts

I have already tried the following:
-using the patch provided here
-building a package instead of using the nvidia-installer (on arch linux, this is quite easy), but both ways of installing fail...
-uninstalled the old drivers and deleted every nvidia driver related file, then a reboot and a re-check if there are any leftover files or loaded modules, before installing the new version...

Nothing helped me :/

I dont know what it is, acording to the nvidia-bug-report.log everything seems to be ok and there are no old files loaded for example... When i take a look into my Xorg.0.log file, i can see that the Xserver dies without a message when initializing GLX...

About my xorg.conf: I have already tried to disable or modify the various options (like setting NvAGP from 1 to 3), and i have tried it with a fresh and clean xorg.xonf without any further options too, nothing works...

So maybe you can help me, i have attached the nvidia-bug-report.log...

Thanks

Funkyou

Have you tested with NvAGP set to 0 ?
Does 1.0-8774 work ok?

Thanks,
Lonni

Thanks for your reply...

Any older drivers including 1.0-8774 are working rock solid and i didnt had any issue with them. This is the first time i experience such behaviour with the drivers...

I have now tried it with "NvAGP" "0" but i get the same black screen again...

Maybe its my kernel... I am running 2.6.17 with the emission patchset (which is based on the cK patchset) for improved performance, but there are others who run this kernel/driver combination without any problems... I will test this with a vanilla kernel tomorrow and post my results here...

I have generated another nvidia-bug-report.log and attached it...

Have you tried (re)installing the driver with the --force-tls option set to new or classic? Also, your bug report lacks the installer log. I'd like to see a bug report which includes that log.

Thanks,
Lonni

no, not kernel. I had(have) same issue with several 2.16.16-* kernels.

It is buggy nVidia BETA driver ...

Hi guys,

I am having the same problem here. After I upgraded to FC6-test3 and 9725 I am getting a black screen, although everything seem to be working well. The computer is not frozen and I can switch to the console vt's. Logging on as the root I can see that Xorg is up and running though if try to switch back to vt7 then it freezes up and I have to reboot. Furthermore, 8774 or earlier versions are no longer working. It will freeze up at start and I will not even see the splash screen.

In order to compile the driver, I had to copy linux/config.h from 2.6.18-1.2726, since it is deprecated and is not there anymore.

Please let me know if I can be of any further help.

Waldeck

well i disabled it.. compiled the kernel and its working now..

my problem is that i compiled a bunch of diferent kernels..with diferent patches..
and configurations... i even reverted to my old working kernel..(2.6.18-viper1) compiled it.. and it wouldnt work... f*s..
therefore it was something that ive selected or..deselected..but this last time.. i took out the eeprom..and its working now..

maybe the ppl from nvidia.. can tell us the things that nvidia really needs on a kernel configuration..(yeah..maybe some already available... )

(forgot to say thanks to bugger.. thanks!.. if it really was the eeprom.. with so many compiled kernels behind me.. i just want to forget...)
