Default Very strange white screen with 9625

I'm trying to help my friend get his laptop running right. I just had him re-emerge his whole system (gentoo). He's currently using xorg-7.1 and and nvidia-9625. When you start x, the screen goes blank first (mode switching I assume), then you get this very strange white artifact on the screen. You can ctrl-alt-backspace to exit Xorg. If we setup X with a CRT, then it appears to work. If we configure X to use 'nv', it works. If I set the option to use DFP before CRT, then I get a strange crash to console. Here is the current situation:

lappy doc # Xorg -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf -logverbose 9
_XSERVTransSocketOpenCOTSServer: Unable to open socket for inet6
_XSERVTransOpen: transport open failed for inet6/lappy:0
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to open listener for inet6

Without being 100% sure if it would do anything or not, specify a default color depth in the X conf and give that depth modes. Eg
Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen 1"
    Device "nvidia"
    Monitor "Generic Monitor"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Thanks for the tip! Although it isn't currently in my xorg.conf, that has definitely been tried. I should actually put that back in.... thanks for reminding me

tried the patch too

Just outta curiosity... would the patch only fix a problem related to me using I2C? I currently have all I2C disabled in the kernel. I've also tried with and without AGPGART from the kernel.

I also have another question... I hope this isn't too dumb of a question:

I know there is a DRI option in the kernel, and there is a DRI module that could be loaded in X, and now there is a "dri" use flag for xorg-server in gentoo. Do I want ANY of these DRI options if i'm using a fully supported nvidia card with xorg7.1?

Thanks!

I still can't figure this out. Can anyone give me some more troubleshooting tips?

I think the key thing here is that it works fine on a CRT, but not a DFP. When I force X to use the DFP, it crashes with:

Backtrace:
0: Xorg(xf86SigHandler+0x81) [0x80cb24c]
1: [0xffffe420]
