I'm finally gonna have to put some serious thought in to getting a quad I think. As for DX10, it just runs slow and gittery. I've not done a FPS test, so I'll try that and I'll also try running out of SLI. I might turn out to be a driver problem though. Slawter, what drivers are you using for the 280?

EDIT: Also, are there any updates that I should be installing? I've got SP2 on now but I've not installed other updates.

FSX will use up to 256 cores, or some such silly number, but it only uses one for the core simulation, and all the rest are used for terrain loading only.

So the advantage of a quad core is hopefully better terrain loading, having said that a friend of mine has an overclocked Q6600 and the terrain loading still is rubbish at times, even in slow GA aircraft.

FSWC has been updated BTW – it’s safe now…

I have also seen that and I almost bought it multiple times. I am a big space fan and the thought of returning to the atmosphere and landing the shuttle seems cool.

Then again, I guess you could just turn the engines off on any of the planes and just glide down...

As far as Quads go, I've tested a 2.8Ghz Athlon Single, a 3.5GHz Core 2 Dual, and a 3.0GHz Quad.

Pre-SP1 I had perfectly fine texture loading with my single core Athlon, with very few blurries, and was quite happy. After SP1 came out I flew over a blurry mess at all times, textures would not even load, period. I then had to go out and buy a new Dual Core system, which brought my terrain texture loading performance back up where it was with the Athlon Pre-SP1, but the Dual on SP1 was still not loading ground textures like the Single did Pre-SP1, so I was not happy. I then went out and bought my Quad, and even though it runs 500MHz slower than the Dual I would say it doubled my terrain texure performance and I am now quite happy with it as I get few blurries.

So based on my findings and my style of flight I would say a Quad is essential, but if you don't get blurries and don't have a problem with blurries there is really no need, as the main benefit is going to be improvements in terrain texture loading speed. For a guy who flies at 30k ft there probably is not going to be much difference, but for a guy like me who flies at tree top level the difference between a dual and quad is night and day.

From my experience it seems Pre-SP1 the texture loading worked great, but with SP1/SP2 it was Parallelized and went to crap on anything but dual or quad, and for my purposes it went to crap on anything but quad.

Damn . Well it'll have to wait a bit, just spent a load on the cards.

Here's a shot from tonights playing , after installing the water mod;

BTW, I couldn't get FSWC to work in DX10, is it the same for you guys?

I'd love to figure out how to get shots like yours; I don't think I have the patience for this game though.

well i put vista64 on. i had it on before put got impatient with it cause of sound issues. well i still have sound popping and glitches and the only game i have issues with is FSX. all my other games seemed to do fine so far this week. well i can only use 160series drivers with vista and FSX other wise the dreaded "display driver stopped responding crap frick i hate nvidia drivers with fsx has recovered message."

well i guess i can put xp on now and dual boot if all else fails. and DX10 runs like crap for me......frame rates cut in half. ohh well. i ordered a gtx280 this week. maybe that with newer drivers may help.........maybe.......lol

i got this hong kong scenery........looks great for me.

nice screenshots here everybody.
