For anyone interested FSX SP1 should be released to beta next week.

You can read the developers blog if you would like, he has a ton of great info and insights into the developement of FSX, DX10, multithreading, and other topics.

Thanks. They're at 1600x1200 16xAA/16xAF on the system in my sig.

FSX is totally CPU bound though, and really likes memory bandwidth.

I don't normally buy fast RAM, but I'll be getting fast RAM next time specifically so I can run FSX as fast as possible. I'm hoping SP1 and DX10 combined with a 3.5GHz Core2Duo system at the end of the year will let me run with mostly max settings, but we will see how the patches affect performance.

Both SP1 and DX10 should help relieve the CPU boundedness.

I don't think there is even dual core support...I read something that they made the decision early in the design of the game not to make it multithreaded....and to change that now would be rediculous...it could use it though...I bet quad core support would eliminate the CPU bottleneck.

It has very limited dual threading right now, and its only dual threading and not multi as there is no difference from 2 to 4 cores.

I've only seen one benchmark comparing a single core to two and four cores and both the dual and quad systems had exactly a 7% improvement over the single core. The test were all done on intel chips at the same clock.

SP1 is supposed to address dual core performance.

If you read the blog posted above he details the design decisions.

Here is some info about the CPU bottleneck in FSX.

The DX10 release will give additional reductions due to the better instancing, and due to the reduced per-API call overhead.

I never thought this many people are interested in FSX. i'v seen people upgrading to 8800GTXs & quad-core or C2Ds just for this game & yet not happy with the performance
i keep telling them to wait for the DX10 patch. hope its worth the wait.

Latest word from the developers is that SP1 will be out 2nd half of April, and it will give a 20%+ performance gain accross the board. It was released to beta today.

Is there any word on the DX10 patch?

I might actually pic up FS X if this SP1 lives up to billing... I played the demo a few times on my X2 4200+/7900GS rig... it was a filmstrip. Haven't tried it with my G80 yet.

There's no DX10 patch until near the end of the year. It should come out right before the Adrenaline Expansion pack.

If you tweak the settings right FSX runs pretty good. I'm getting about 25-27fps in the shot below. I posted my tweaks here. The best thing you can do for performance is to disable light bloom and set water no higher than Low2.x.

Well you definitely have posted some nice screens in the SS'07 thread. How is it in the urban areas with all of those buildings?
