Well I went to do these screen shots for you last night and what do ya know! For some reason all the the airports in X-Plane have NO buildings, aircraft or anything, just looks like a parking lot. X-Plane has been nothing but trouble for me. It has to be the most buggy software I have ever used.

X-Plane=FAIL!

New to the world of FSX... Where does one begin with all these addons and products that are available for FSX Gold Edition.

Any off the cuff recomendations to get FSX looking like some of these screenshots? I have a pretty decent rig.

Q9650 @ 4ghz
2 8800Gt SLI (will be changing soon)
8 gigs Ram
Win 7 64
TrackIR 5
Modded Cougar HOTAS

I live in SoCal and I've used FSX just to have fun with some of the IFR stuff. Sorta keeping it fresh in my head. Shooting some approaches around the local area. Just want to bump up the volume and immersion.

Scendore,

You could start off looking at Real Environment Extreme (link below). That program completely transforms the environment, clouds, sky, water, stars, sun...ect. Also try FTX they create high resolution scenery and I think they still have a free demo of SO Cal. I use both and am very happy. REX is my favorite, I would start there it's around $50usd.

OK, I just tested the modded FSX SM3.0 shader and I must say...well, it doesn't work good on my system. The first thing I experienced was that I couldn't activate/deactivate ENB-Series with Shift+F12 command.
The water looks a bit dull (maybe like default FSX, I mean without REX) as if it doesn't have deepness or something like that, even if the sunlight reflection on the water looks great.
Another one ist that you can see the sun not only through clouds but also through the earth.
More I didn't look for, I qickly changed to my default setting, "default" meaning FSX+REX2. By the way, I didn't observed any change in performance, but that's only my subjective...feeling, I didn't use a counter.
At first I thought maybe I should load again my REX-settings with the new shaders. I did that and it was the same, i mean bad. I reverted back but forgot to take the 2 new lines in [Graphics] in fsx.cfg out and, funny thing, it was still the same, I mean bad again. Without the 2 new lines I came finaly at my own defaults (so FSX+REX2).
Well, I'm not so good at this, so I can't tell you what's going wrong. Maybe it works on default FSX, I mean without REX, because yes, the water looks better with the sm3-tweak, is more detailed than the default water, it's even more detailed than the "sparkling" setting in REX, but still, it lacks (oh God, I'm gonna use great words, greater than I could speak) the natural beauty of REX2. Well that's my experience with it. Sorry for my bad english, iI live in Germany and I come from Romania, was born in Transylvania
See some (not very good) examples taken at the same hour, same season, and (almost) the same place, the screens are 1920x1200, resized and sharpened:

Evening (or was it dawn?) over Istambul, Turkey

Water over Oahu, Hawaii

Hey Nubee

Thanks for the feedback on the SM3.0 mod ive downloaded in and put it away for when i get my new rig built,by the looks of the shots it seems that he's boosting the bump levels spec lighting and based colour blends

Looking over the shader layout it seems that if you want to get your old water back but keep the rest of the SM3.0 shader you can replace

\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\ShadersHLSL\Terrain\Water20.fx

\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\ShadersHLSL\Terrain\Water20.fxh

with your old/default shader files and then alter the line

SHADER_CACHE_VERSION=

in the FSX.cfg file to a digit higher than it is (so if its set to SHADER_CACHE_VERSION=1 alter it to SHADER_CACHE_VERSION=2 ect ect)to force FSX to rebuild the shader cache

that should also allow you to use FSWC to alter your shaders as due to the changes FSWC wont work with the SM3.0 mod

just make sure you back it all up before you start though just incase im wrong

btw heres those KA50 repaints i did,all 3 scheme zips in 1 file
