Yeah get SP2, or buy the Acceleration expansion pack which comes with SP2 and three new aircraft(P-51, F/A-18, EH-101). If you want to add some top quality aircraft to the experience the Acceleration pack is the cheapest way to do that($30).

There are thousands of add ons for aircraft and scenery, both freeware and payware, and you can spend hundreds if you want, so you will just have to search around and see what you want to get.

Being there is so much to chose from, ranging from the bottom to the top of the barrel, if you ask for recommendations somebody will be glad to help, and there are a few posts with said recommendations if you look through this thread. I know I've called out my favorite freeware and payware aircraft/scenery several times in here.

Just as an example, using the screenshots from the previous page, the one a the top is the P-51 from the Acceleration pack flying over default out of the box scenery. The pics of Hawaii are using the MegasceneryX photoscenery pack($15), combined with a couple freeware additions.

The C-130 is made by Captain Sim(39 Euro), which is sitting on the Edwards AFB scenery which comes in the Acceleration pack.

Hey guys,

I'm having some trouble to complete the high altitude intercept mission from the Acceleration pack. The UFO is too fast, I cannot chase it without overspeeding the aircraft. I only complete about 50% of the interrogation process, but after it the UFO start flying at 870 knots or high, what is impossible to follow. Does anyone have any tip on this? Thanks.

If you're tired of the generic default air traffic you might consider the World of AI freeware. It will include new models, paints, and appropriate schedules.
http://www.world-of-ai.com/packages.php

Personaly I use MyTrafficX, which is payware. But I've heard great things about WoAI.

And here are some misc fsx links,

This little guy is quite fun. Its got power but not too much, and its really smooth, where something like the F/A-18 might be too responsive. The dynamic shine looks even better in motion.

You can use keyboard and mouse but I wouldn't bother since joysticks can be had for $25.

Wikipedia details all the differences. See the link for more.

Get a TrackIR too while you're at it. The exta level of immersion it adds is amazing.
