Default Re: black screen with nvidia 1.0.9625

"Me Too"

Fedora 5, 2.6.17 kernel, GeForce 5700LE, Viewsonic 1680x1050 flat panel.

While troubleshooting a system instability issue that only showed up during 3D (appears to have been a bad DIMM) I tried using 1.0.9626 with the following results:

1) Black screen on startx

2) Patched with the SMB-removal patch, X starts in a different resolution than specified in xorg.conf.

3) nvidia-settings doesn't show 1680x1050 as an allowed resolution, and there was no way to set it.

So even though I got it working, I was unable to set the native resolution of my flat-panel, so I backed it out to 1.0.8xxx, which works.

I install the official 9626 package, and I can startx with no black screen.
I get 1400+fps by glxgears, is it normal with my GF 6200LE ?

netllama, thanks for your help

Hi Loni,

Fedora Core 6 was out yesterday and I installed it. I tested 9625 and 9626 and nothing changed. I still get nothing but a black screen I could post new bug reports, but they would look identical to the ones I posted before, so these drivers are definitely not for me.

I managed to get 8776 up and running, though it was a minor disappointment. Since this version doesn't support AIGLX, Xgl is the only way I can obtain some eye candy. But even this is not working anymore. It seems the community assumed that 9626 was good for everyone so there was no reason to worry about Xgl anymore. Unfortunately, it's a bit hard to compile Xgl on my own and the last version is for Fedora Core 5. With this version, I cannot run compiz due to an error I could not fix and beryl only gives me a white cube! I browsed compiz and beryl forums for solutions, it looks like I am the only one in the whole world to be suffering from this problem.

Well, unless you have some good news, I guess I can only sit, wait and hope that the next version of the driver will work for me.

Best,
Waldeck

Yet another me-too altho i've a different setup.

I installed the nvidia driver as available in the non-free section of debian experimental: 9625 with SMBus patch.

I get the infamous black screen.

This nvidia-bug-report.log was generated by rebooting in single mode.

Should I go thru the same steps i.e. try 1024x768_75_0, try w/o eeprom module, try 9626 (where can i get it? not listed on the pages?!), etc.?

Thanks,

-Pascal

It turns out it (9625) works fine if I "rmmod eeprom". Hmmm...
So the patch didn't suffice... there's something else.

There must be something else going on! My second computer has a nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1) card and I have just installed Fedora Core 6 on it. Yesterday I tryied out 9626 with the SMBUS patch. The eeprom module was not loaded or even present. It too shows the same problem. Now it's two different computers, two different cards, and the same problem. Hmmm......

The BETA driver scared the **** out of me.
After using the 9625 driver for 3 hours, I went on and played an opengl game for about 30mins.

While playing, the computer froze.
I then rebooted as usual, but now, I wasn't able to reach Grub!

Woooo! I thought that the nvidia card bios could have got screwed like i've read on this forum earlier.
I said to myself: "No problem, i'll just use that other card i've laying around (GeForce 2 MX400)".

Tried to boot, got stuck at the same place... argh!!

I'll skip the other steps i've taken to go str8 to the solution...
I've found out I couldn't use my 2 RAM chips (KVR400S4R3AK2/1G) in DIMM1 and DIMM2 anymore!! What the hell!?

Using one at the time worked fine, but using both no longer worked!
After playing around, i noticed that using them in DIMM2 and DIMM3 worked.
So i'm back with my original Geforce4 MX440 and RAM chips changed places.

Now I'm left with this simple question, how come there's a connection with the BETA driver and the RAM chips location!?!

I had been using my RAM chips in slot DIMM1 and DIMM2 for abit more than a year. I can only be lead to think that there's a connection. Could I been that lucky that my Asus K8V-X mobo decided to somehow "break" while trying the BETA driver? Could this really be a coincidence?!

Again, this scared the **** out of me and won't ever use BETA drivers anymore.

Any comments, clarifications, ideas welcomed!

thanks,

-a relieved Pascal who got his system back up w/o much damage afterall
PS: sorry for this long post.

evilynux,
It seems unlikely that the NVIDIA driver caused this problem. More likely is that your motherboard's memory slots are failing (or have failed), and that caused the OS hang.

Thanks,
Lonni

So i've just been lucky.

Lonni, is there an equivalent of memtest86+ for video cards?
Or, is there a way I can verify the integrity of my video card (including the RAM or not)?

I went thru memtest86+ and my system RAM is perfect but i'm still experiencing freezes. (Sometimes I can reach the machine via ssh, sometimes I can't.)

I'm not aware of any graphics card test software that is publicly available.
Does the instability go away if you switch to using the nv X driver?
