Hi Lonni,

Before this thread strays too far off, is there any news about the black screen problem? Anything in sight at all?

netllama,
i don't have any freeze when using the nv driver.

Basically, was working fine with 8774, started to freeze with 8776.
I've filled a bugreport in the Debian BTS awhile back describing this problem¹.

Should I start another thread about this? (I agree that i'm dragging the thread out of scope).

thanks,

-Pascal

Hi all,
i have the same problem with a Toshiba satellite 1410-801. My card is a geforce 420 go and the screen start well with 1.0-8xxx drivers. Maybe it can be a problem of my xorg.conf: i had a problem with edids that i resolved here:http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=69163.

I have a similar problem with the Toshiba Tecra M5 running RedHat 9 kernel 2.4

As soon as I startx I get the black screen. I have not tried some of the suggestion yet though. Thus I will try;

1. 9626 driver
2. 1024x768_75_0
3. w/o eeprom module "rmmod eeprom"
4. ConnectedDevices "DFP"
5. IgnoreDevices "CRT,TV"
6. Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"
7. BIOS Update
8. "modeprobe nvidia" command, before starting X via "startx" command

I will advise of further results as they arise.

OK I have tried steps 1 to 8 without success.

Black Screen on my BenQ Joybook 3000 with GeForce4 420 Go 32M.
On my other notebook, an HP NX9015 with the same GeForce4 420 Go 32M all are working fine.

OS tested: SuSE Linux 10.1, Kubuntu 6.10, Mandriva 2007 and Sabayon 3.1 Live for onthefly test.

C'mon Nvidia fix the drivers.

When I do the # "modprobe nvidia" command I get the following;

Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.20-30.9/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - NVIDIA

See http://www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted for information about tainted modules Module nvidia loaded, with warnings

hwd007:

The 'Taints' message is normal. You can ignore it.

None of the major PC manufacturers 'officially support' Linux, except on specific models. If you are looking for a vendor that will provide support for Linux, go here for a list.

In any case, these comments are off-topic for this thread.

I'm presently trying the recently released 1.0.9629 drivers. Where I would normally get a black screen, now I get something, but unfortunately there's still something wrong with the video modes. I could not manage to get 1024x768 which is the max resolution on my DFP. The best I can get so far is a 800x600 rectangle in the middle of the screen. It seems strange though that this rectangle does not fill the entire screen and I have thick black borders around it.

I have two distinct situations:

1. If I disable EDID's, then I get something like 640x480, but the screen is squeezed towards the lefthand side, leaving the righthand side black.

2. If I enable EDID's, then the 1024x768 mode is not validated and I get the aforementioned 800x600 rectangle.

Ok, further testing showed me that things are still badly broken. I'll open a new thread on 1.0.9629.

Here is a link to the new thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show....php?p=1057230
