More testing with 1.0.9631 and things are still broken, but seem to be converging towards something. Now instead of a black screen I get a black screen with a one-pixel wide line in middle of the screen. The effective video mode is correct and works fine with 1.0.8776. Anyway I'll open up a new thread on this.

I had the same problem on my Dell Inspiron 8200 with an nVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go. Adding the following option to the "Device" section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf fixed it for me:
