Default X Server running at 100% CPU but...

Hi everyone.

I'm using a cluster of Fedora Core 4, running on a single Xeon. All nodes are equiped with a Quadro Fx 4400. Each nodes has 2 LCD screens.

The Nvidia Drivers used are the 8178, and the kernel is a 2.6.11 (FC4 smp).

When a node boots up, everythings is ok, except that the X process is using 100% of the CPU. If I restart X process, it goes under normal CPU usage. I just want to insist on the fact that the CPU usage is at 100% but I'm doing nothing on the node (except a ssh connection). And by the way, nothing is displayed on the screen, as I use a script of my own to avoid KDE to be launched (I just need the X server to be started)

I haven't found any solution using the search function, so if someone has an explanation for this behavior, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ps : if more info is needed, just ask

If this problem reproduces with the 1.0-9626 driver, please generate and attach an nvidia-bug-report.log while the problem is present.

Thanks,
Lonni

Hi

I haven't been able to find the 9626 for EMT64 processor, so I tryied with the 9625 Beta, and the problem still the same. I will continue to search for a problem on my side, BTW, here is the bug-report log, if it can helps.

Thanks for your time

I have a few questions:
0) Was this bug report generated while the problem was present?
1) Does this problem persist with a more recent kernel?
2) The X log in your bug report shows that you're using 1.0-8178, not 1.0-9626. I'd like to see a bug report against 1.0-9626.
3) Does this problem persist if you're not using the ConnectedMonitor option?

Thanks,
Lonni

Yes

Can't use a more recent kernel. We use Infiniband hardware, which require this kernel, if we want to use official drivers.

Well, this is the bug-report I generated using the 9626 (installation, reboot, and generate the bug report). In the bug report I can see the 9626 is used : Oct 19 10:12:47 node3 kernel: NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86_64 Kernel Module 1.0-9626 Wed Sep 20 16:36:52 PDT 2006

(October 19 10:12:47 is the last reboot of the system)

Haven't tried yet. I will check this.

Thanks

The bug report that you posted indicated that the 1.0-9626 nvidia kernel module was loaded, however the X log indicated that you had last run with the 1.0-8178 driver. I'd like to see a bug report against 1.0-9626.

I'm having a similar problem...

When I start the X server (with X, not startx - application requirement) in the boot scripts, the X server uses 100% CPU; if I restart the X server, after boot, it resumes normal CPU usage.

I'm using RHEL 4 U3 (the apps are QA for these versions).

I've installed the latest drivers selected from the driver page (I noticed I've downloaded the same driver as I would for consumer products, even though I have a quadro adapter)

I attach the nvidia-bug-report.sh executed while this was happening.

The only thing that I see potentially bad in your bug report is:
(WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): No connected display devices detected; assuming 1 CRT (CRT-0)
(WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-0
(WW) xf86OpenConsole: VT_ACTIVATE failed
(WW) xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed

Is the display device connected directly to the graphics card without any intermediary devices (switchbox, KVM, etc)?

I have a few additional questions:
0) Was the bug report you attached, generated while X was consuming 100% CPU? If not, please post one. If yes, I'd like to see a bug report when the problem is not present and X is working normally.
1) Does this problem also reproduce with 1.0-9742?

Thanks,
Lonni

0) The X process was consuming 100 % CPU when I did the nvidia-bug-report
1) I tryed 1.0-9629 and 1.0-9631 and happened on all machines I tryed (3 to be exact)

I don't have a monitor connected (as this is a server machine) and don't plan on having one. I will try to see if that makes any difference.

You talk about 1.0-9742. Is this a stable release version? The machine I took the bug report are a production platform, and as such I really shouldn't try non stable versions.

Tryed with a connected monitor and it's the same.

Howto reproduce: with runlevel 3, call X with "nohup X &" or "daemon X &" from a boot script on RHEL 4 U3 (tested with FC3 and it is the same).
