Are you use Vista RC2 build 5744? Yes I had same problem but I found a workaround to get my card reader working. RC1 build 5728 never had this kind of problem, it read card reader fine.

To fix the issue. Plug your card reader into USB port and it will pop a dialog to tell it not recognised a unknown device then go to Control Panel/Device Manager and expand USB Controllers and then disabled Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller. Finally Vista will automatically detect your card reader properly.

card reader is detected fine

just when i insert the card, light blinks but nothing happens, after couple minutes sometimes it wakes up and says oh card is here, what you want to do.

what you suggested seems to turn your usb 2.0 product into 1.1

Yes, I already reported the bug to Microsoft and it should be fixed in Vista RTM.
