Here are FEAR benches from our buddy Mike686, again it was run at 1600x1200 4x/16x everything maxed, but this time without soft shadows, so that we can compare directly to previous gen cards.

I must say compared with the results in my post above, I was suprised the performance hit was so small. On my system I take a large hit with soft shadows, so if you get soft shadows nearly for free on G80, that's pretty sweet.

That score is close to my Quad score!
at same settings (16x12,4x16x) on Quad-SLI , 4800+ i get :
min = 42 , av = 86 , max = 195

mike can you run the same test with SS but without AA ? (i.e. 16x12,noAA,SS,16xAF)

Well it still runs damn hot, even if it is at 80nm. Mike686 said his runs at 80C under load. I wonder how these cards will overclock?

I can't wait to upgrade late next year when NVIDIA steps up to the ATI R600. I'll make my final purchase mean something when they come out with their refresh 8800 GTX or higher.

Wow! 80C under load? I hope the GTS is much cooler.

80*C under HEAVY load. In other words, it tops out around 80*C.

^ Sounds like you need some better cooling, bro.

Unless G80 has some kinda fix, soft-shadows aren't supposed to work with in-game AA enabled on FEAR. Are you sure you were getting soft-shadows on that one benchmark? Because you can enable them in-game but on current-gen cards they won't show up unless all AA (both in-game and graphics-utility AA) is disabled.

From the FEAR readme file:
Quote:
* The Soft Shadows option will have no effect if the Full-Screen Anti-Aliasing
(FSAA) option is enabled. Also, you may notice odd rendering issues with
shadows in the game if you enable this option while FSAA is enabled
through the Windows(R) control panel.
