Your case airflow must suck. My GX2 idled at 53C and never went over 72C under full load.

Yes it does! But it makes you appreciate your new system so much more!

It probably does suck, but when overclocked, my GX2 ran 30 degrees hotter than the 7900GTX (also overclocked) I had before it under full load.

BTW, I think I was mistaken. It idled at 70C when overclocked. It was in the low 60s when running stock.

"stoolman", one of the biggest names in overclocking in Norway got his hands on a GeForce 8800GTX:

http://www.diskusjon.no/index.php?sh...=653622&st=120

Core2Duo 4,55GHz
GeForce 8800GTX with stock cooler and 3 Deltas blowing over it. He tested it outside in the winter cold. He managed 660MHz core and 2060MHz memory
So it would seem that the overclocking potential is about 10-15% without volt mod or extreme cooling.

Yeah, it seems like the card is maxing out in the 12-13k range. A 4.5Ghz Core 2 and a Quad core should be more than enough to eliminate a CPU bottleneck, but I have yet to see anything over 13k for these cards.

I wonder what it gets in SLI on a similar CPU.

I wonder why is a 450W PSU is recommended, as we've seen the 8800GTX takes up up to 321 Watts (Dailytech), so you have 129 Watts left for the rest of the system, while gaming.

Even a recommedation of a 800W PSU for SLi setup seems not enough

This is considering one card can really use up to 321 Watts.

I wonder if it takes that much in the whole gaming time, or maby it takes less usually.

I think 321W is for the whole system. The card by itself is more in the vicinity of 130-140W ( I think ).

Yes that was for the whole system measuring from the power cord going to the wall.

Thats a relief

So they did not test the power consumption of the card alone

In that case the only question is why the big number of 800W for SLi

Just guessing, but it could have something to do with the amperage situation.

Lets say each card consume 140W max. That's app 12A each. Assuming then that you need at least three rails on the PSU ( given that one is reserved by the CPU ), and giving some headroom for the rest of the system's need for 12V-lines, a rough estimate would give: 3x16A@12V = 576W. On top of that you'd need amperage for the other voltage-rails.

Perhaps 800W reccomendation is merely an easy/lazy/indirect way to guarantee that your system would have enough Amps on the 12V rails.
