don't need a hardware firewall, thats why this thread is in software, not hardware

i just want a good software firewall thats low on recourses, will detect programs trying to access the web, and build in ad-blocker would be nice too.

This is a good lill software firewall, has a small footprint and the traffic log is awsome. I usta use this before I got a router, its the best software firewall I ever used.

Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6

When I used to run a software firewall I used to use Tiny Personal Firewall, don't know if it still exists though.

Ive been using Zonealarm Pro ver 4.5.594 for a few years now, in my opinion the last good release before ZoneLabs got bought by CheckPoint, I tried upgrading to the newer "CheckPoint owned" versions a few times but all later versions caused CPU hangs and other problems so I just gave up and have been using this old one, and ive never had any issues at all.

Keep in mind this version does NOT work with SP2 in Windows XP, and installing it on SP2 will just crash your computer as soon as the driver loads.

I've been using the latest update of Zone Alarm Pro as well without a problem- I love it.

In fact, I'm always recommending it to customers at work. Haven't come across a better software firewall yet.

Windows XP Firewall + Linksys Router + Ad-Aware SE + Spybot S&D + Firefox 2.0

Anti-virus = AVG Free (for now)

I don't see whats wrong with just using a NAT router, even if it's an el cheapo, as your only firewall. Then whatever ports you want to allow for incoming, just use port forwarding. I don't see any need for blocking outgoing ports, unless you are a bit absent minded when it comes to security in the first place.

I agree, Zone Alarm is quite good and light on resources. About a month ago I switched to ZA's Security Suite and I'm quite impressed; all this protection and its using much less than half the ram Spyware Doctor did. The suite is only $10 more than just the firewall so its a much better value even if you dont need AV or extras
