Hi,
I'm the co-maintainer of gnome-mag and we are disapointed with the actual nvidia drivers implementation, since Xrender has the needed drivers-hooks, but drivers are falling back to software. If we have Xrender scale implemetend in hardware we could have a much more confortable scroll, since more computational intensive smoothing algorithms will be only applied when the user stop the mouse for a while, so scaling in hardware have the advantage to show to the user a more smooth scrolling of the screen. Thanks, Carlos. |

* GTK uses now cairo and does some antialiasing.
* Mozilla will use Cairo (for all not ust SVG) which means a lot of could-be-accalerated content, mozilla already uses XRender for image-scaling. * Subpixel Antialiasing causes readbacks in large amounts, dropping performance down to what was common 10 years ago on PCI-E hardware. * Whenever guys present XRender benchmarks, self-rolled image backends are way faster than the Render stuff. Why is it _that_ hard or impossible to just implement the needed driver hookups for XRender stuff? And why are nvidia devs so quiet about it? Everytime someone mentions bad Xrender performance he gets completly ignored by the nvdia developers, which it seems prefer to answer questions about black screens and not working AGP support over and over. For now the only thing nvidia devs seem to do is to take care that the image is help in ram if a lot of software operations happen - but I wonder why? Is it really that hard to implement scaling, aa-traps and translucent traps in hardware? When loooking at XRender's capabilities its design its so simple, the only reason why it could be hard to implement is a broken hardware design. Why is it that hard to use Shaders for Subpixel-Antialiasing, if even SUN was able to do this for java with Shader-2.0 compatible GLSL shaders? lg Clemens |

btw. I forgot:
* KDE4 will use RENDER extensivly (have a look at plasma's glow/rain/... effects). * QT-4.x provides a very powerful vector drawing library which uses XRender a lot * Many apps _will_ use SVGs as Icons which want to be rendered antialiased. lg Clemens |
