Question Fedora Core 6 - Kernel 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6

It appears that the NVIDIA driver does not compile for this new release of fedora.

This is what I get in my -> /var/log/nvidia-installer.log

I've gotten past this. Apparently, including <linux/config.h> is deprecated with the latest kernel.

So, first execute the .run package with the -x flag to just decompress and extract the directory structure. Then edit comment out #include <linux/config.h> in the file nv-linux.h. Now manually run the installation script.

You will also have to install the package from xorg containing the SDK.

Now I'm still left without a working xorg.conf file, but I think I'll be able to get that working soon...

Ok after commenting out the #include <linux/config.h> in the file nv-linux.h it works much better. I have successfully setup the drivers for FC6 now. I had to manually change the xorg.conf file, but I was comfortable doing that.

Thanks!

Hi...

I'm sorry to ask, but i have done a search for that and, even though I've seen this is a known problem with FC6, I still didn't get if it has already been solved or not.
In the post you're referencing above, Lonni says it will be fixed in the next driver release. Now, since they're not talking about version numbers and his post is from the 16th this month while the latest drivers (8776) are dated on the 19th... does that mean the problem should be fixed now? Or is he talking about a further release?

Thanks,
Ivan.

Just create symlink crom autoconfig.h to config.h in your kernel sources.

I am currently building a Linux rig, and since my ATI Radeon card broke and I had heard NVidia's OpenGL support is better than ATI's particularly for Linux, I thought I'd switch from ATI to NVidia hardware. When trying to install the accelerated gfx driver I ran into the problem posted above although I had the latest OS updates and kernel sources installed (OpenSUSE 10.1 64 bit). Fortunately I only had a very cheap low end gfx card I had borrowed for setting up the system. Now I am a Linux noob and I don't think I will fiddle around with NVidia's broken installer to get the driver running. Last time I used the ATI installer I hadn't needed to shut down X, it didn't have problems finding my kernel sources, and after running a simple initializer and a reboot everything worked w/o a hitch.

Since I need some new hardware quick, and since I need it to work I will not have a choice but to stick with ATI.

You may think I am trolling, but if some NVidia people read this take this as a feedback and get your bloody act together.

creating an empty config.h should be enough
