First the hardware:
Sony Vaio VGN-FS760/W Intel Pentium M processor 1.86GHz 1G ram Nvidia GeForce 6400 go w/ 128M Software: Fedora Core 6 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 Kernel NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9626 Video driver. AddARGBGLXVisuals is set to true in xorg.conf (see attached file) Option "Composite" has been set to both "enable" and "disable" with no effect problem: 100% cpu usage on the simplest actions such as loading a web page in firefox or mozilla (sea monkey). Scrolling through a text file quickly will peg the cpu. Top reports it's the X server consuming the majority of the cycles. Half-life 2 does not abuse the cpu like this. I've scanned the forums and cannot find an answer to this issue. [edit] Although it's not a real benchmark, glxgears is showing 230 fps! Any Ideas? TIA, Dave |

Is your system an upgrade or a fresh install? I was having this exact same issue on Fedora 5 testing until got another disk and installed a fresh copy of Fedora Core 6.
Your configuration is same as mine but my fedora 6 works great! |

I'm a bit confused about your post, because you stated that this problem is only present with Compiz, yet you also stated that the problem is present when Composite is set to disable. Compiz won't work at all if Composite is disabled. Can you clarify this?
Thanks, Lonni |

Sorry, my bad.
I had not set composit at first. (Default on?). Then I set it per one of the sticky's above and noticed no difference. Peace, Dave |

fonzer,
Yes it is a clean install. I've never had good luck "upgrading" anything in the fedora line. Peace, Dave |

I don't think the option composite has any effect in xorg.conf anymore. I just put it in for compatability, if there is such a thing anymore...
I documented my install on www.thenerdshow.com |

Composite is enabled by default in FC6.
