Default X driver mismatch after installing nvidia driver

Hi All,

I've successfully installed the nvidia beta driver without getting any errors during the install.

I'm using ubuntu edgy xorg 7.1

after installing I restarted x and the splash screen was displayed, everything good,

then I reboot and I get this error:

Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has the version 1.0-7184 but this X module has the version 1.0-9625. Please make sure that the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version.

then it goes on to say:

failed to initialize the nvidia kernel module.

..

Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

arrg.. this is like the 5th time I've had to reinstall ubuntu.. that said, the driver is installed on a FRESH installation with only the required packages installed to get the driver to install.

It looks as if its not removing the old driver or something when it installs the new driver, or its only updating the driver for one bit, and not for the whole thing.

any ideas would be appreciated.

ok, I've made a little progress, if you can call it that, and I can get X working again by editing the xorg.config file and changing the driver to nv rather than nvidia.

Is there some way to force the nvidia kernel module to use the new driver?

If the driver is correctly installed, it will be used. Did you follow the instructions that Zander provided?

I will start again from scratch and see what happens when I uninstall the linux-restricted-modules before installing the nvidia driver.

uninstalling them afterwards sure did get rid of the driver mismatch, which is great, but it is still not loading X with the driver enabled.

thanks for your help and patience.

This time I *know* I've followed the guide 100% to the letter. Still not working. Now I can't even reload X after the installation. Same error.

something about not being able to load the NVIDIA-kernel module or something.

Unless there's something I can try that's going to give me some results, I'm going to try something else entirely regarding the whole issue of drivers and so forth.

thanks
