Default All NVIDIA drivers crash w/ Fedora Core 6 (Xorg 7.1) on an X86_64 when exiting X

Dear NVIDIA team,

since installing FC6 on my machine on monday I am trying to get a working system up and running without any luck. I was able to set up an X system w/ the nvidia driver, but as soon as I exit X, the system completely locks up (not only X). That makes it impossible to switch users or to change the configuration (xorg.conf) to optimize the results. Even when using nvidia-settings to enable twinview the system locks up hard, leaving only garbage on the screen. Also when just typing "compiz" or "beryl", the system freezes. I also managed to freeze the system after pressing the close button to exit a running glxgears instance. I've never seen such an unstable system w/ an nvidia card before. I have another system w/ an x86 which runs quite stable w/ FC6 and a GF5200. But my own desktop machine w/ an x86_64 does not. I've tried the legacy driver (7184 - bugreport attached), the current driver 8776 and also the beta drivers 9625 and 9626. I certainly patched the beta drivers w/ the smbus patch to work around the black screen issue.

Now, I'm running out of ideas. I've searched the forums for any hint I could find, even tried a self built vanilla kernel, tried different combinations of kernel boot params (agp, acpi and commconf stuff) to no avail. The xorg driver "nv" works w/o any problems, but does not support xinerama, so I'm stuck at the moment.

Could anybody please help me resolve this issue?

Thank you very much.

Bye,
Levent.

Please generate and post a bug report against 1.0-9626.

Thanks,

I have a few questions:
0) Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?
1) If you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf does that have any impact?
2) If you boot with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters, does that have any impact?

Thanks,
Lonni

You're doing better than me... I can't even GET the driver to install.

I have disabled selinux and the kernel source, xorg-x11-server-sdk & pkgconfig are all installed, and I am using the --kernel-source-path arguement with /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-1.2798.fc6-x86_64

It just complains that it can't find the kernel source.

I have tried this will all the drivers since 8762 although I would prefer to be using 8178. But I'll take either one at this stage.

Any ideas?

gmp,
I'd suggest reading this, and if you need further assistance, start a new thread, as this one is unrelated to the problem you're reporting.

0) Yes, I have the latest BIOS. V5.3 for the MSI NEO P4 Mainboard.
1) No, same effect.
2) a) noapic does not have any effect. b) I cannot boot with acpi=off, the kernel hangs right after showing a few io schedulers.

Any other idea?

Thanks a lot,
Lev.

I have the same setup except with Quadro NVS 285 card and it seems
to be working fine (x86_64, FC6, DELL Precision 390).

Couple of differences I noticed:

1. I am running the new kernel from updates-testing, which includes
other patches plus 2.6.18.2 patch.

2. I do not seem to have agpgart:

# ls /proc/driver/nvidia
cards/ registry version warnings/

3. To NVIDIA guys: In the latest linux kernel you have to have ACPI
enabled always because this is how kernel detects devices on boot.
You may want to remove this request from the list of questions!

Few more points:

I have nothing in xorg.conf about AIGLX so I must have the default.
But I have the following in the device section:
====================================
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "yes"
Option "DynamicTwinView" "False"
# Enable 32-bit ARGB GLX Visuals
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
# If you are using an older version of compiz that
# does not support rendering into the Composite
# Overlay Window, you will need to disable clipping
# of GLX rendering to the X Root window with this
# option, or you will get a blank screen after
# starting compiz:
# Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True"
# Nick 24/07/2004 - attempt to stop corruption exiting X
# Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT-0"
# Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV-0"
====================================

Notice the bottom comment about stopping corruption when exiting X.
I have those commented, you may try them!
