Default Blank display using 1.0-8756 Linux x86-64 Suse 10.1, dual AMD laptop

Just installed 1.0-8756 on my dual-core AMD laptop. When I try to us the "nvidia" driver, I get nothing but a blank screen. I was running fine using the "nv" driver. Looking at the log files it appears that it does not recognize the resolution of the display.

Anyway by switching back to nv I am able to run.

If this problem persists with the 1.0-9626 driver, please generate and attach an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,
Lonni

I have just tried the 1.0-9626 driver with apparently worse results. As soon as I startx, the screen goes black and I am unable to switch to virutal consoles. When I remote login to run nvidia-bug-report.log, the script hangs at the point where it attempts to cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/card/0. I have to reboot to gain control. I have attached the bug report produced after the reboot and the contents of /proc/drivers/nvidia/card/0.

Thanks, tried your suggestion by applying patch; dirver core dumped. I was about to send you results when I noticed that 1.0.9629 was released. I downloaded and tried it with the same results; I get a black screen and no graphics. I have to log in from a remote terminal to reboot.

I have attached the bug report.

Thanks, I think I see the problem:

(--) NVIDIA(0): Valid VRefresh Range : 0 Hz - 60 Hz
(--) NVIDIA(0): EDID maximum pixel clock : 170.0 MHz
(--) NVIDIA(0):
(--) NVIDIA(0): Detailed Timings:
(--) NVIDIA(0): 1920 x 1200 @ 62 Hz
(--) NVIDIA(0): Pixel Clock : 166.00 MHz
(--) NVIDIA(0): HRes, HSyncStart : 1920, 1968
(--) NVIDIA(0): HSyncEnd, HTotal : 2080, 2208
(--) NVIDIA(0): VRes, VSyncStart : 1200, 1201
(--) NVIDIA(0): VSyncEnd, VTotal : 1205, 1217
(--) NVIDIA(0): H/V Polarity : -/-

The EDID conflicts with itself over the refresh rate that is needed for its only valid mode. It sets the maximum at 60Hz, yet its mode requires 62hz. As a result the driver can't validate that mode, and you end up with a non-native mode, which is clearly not working. You can try adding the following option to xorg.conf:
Option "ModeValidation" "NoVertRefreshCheck"

I should note that the 1920x1400 mode you're requesting in xorg.conf isn't valid, so that isn't going to work regardless. It would also be a good idea to comment out all the modelines in xorg.conf, so that the driver can do its job and use what's in the EDID rather than whatever source came up with the modelines.

Thanks,
Lonni

Thank you!

Adding the Option for NoVertRefreshCheck and deleting most of the modelines, I left some of the low res modes, worked. /var/log/Xorg.0.log did not report any errors. I will remove a few more modes that were not supported.

Cheers
