We've identified a driver bug which could explain the performance issues that you have reported in this thread.

Thanks,
Lonni

If it helps, I can ACK the performance issue on a Opteron/GF6800/x86_64 combo.

Can you give us a rough estimate when a fixed driver will be released?
Does it only affect GF6800xx users?

I'm afraid that I don't have a specific estimate however it should be in the relatively near future.

The bug isn't specific to the GPU. It appears to be specific to certain Linux distributions (SuSE-10.1 being one of them).

Thanks,
Lonni

Another data point:

OS: Fedora Core 4 (kernel: 2.6.17-1.2142_FC4, Xorg: v6.8.2)
CPU: dual Xeon 2.4GHz
GPU: 6800GT, on AGP 4x

glxgears frame rates:

driver v1.0-8776: ~11500fps
driver v1.0-9629: ~11000fps

A definite and consistent slow-down with the new drivers, though not as dramatically bad as others are reporting.

Weird.
Beside certain kernel patches/version, what else can have such a devastating effect on performance?
(Considering the fact the nVidia distributes its own GL libraries.

will this be fixed in the 96xx legacy release or only in upcoming releases of the state-of-the-art driver?

Thanks, lg Clemens

gilboa,
glibc can play a role in how threads are handled in OpenGL applications.

Linuxhippy,
This should be fixed in the next 1.0-96xx driver (as well as 1.0-97xx).

Thanks,
Lonni

Yes, 1.0-9631 should fix this bug, however, you may need to set the __GL_ALWAYS_HANDLE_FORK environment variable to a non-zero value. See the driver README for more information on its usage.

Thanks,
Lonni
