NoMaxPClkCheck

I copy here what I just posted to the Mandriva Club Forum at http://forum.club.mandriva.com/viewt...=275907#275907.

I had the same problem: GeForce4 440 Go [NV17] card on a Samsung X10, no problem with Mandriva 2006 and associated nvidia driver, then could not display on laptop screen after installing Mandriva 2007 and nvidia-8774-3mdv2007.0.i586. Display on external screen works fine.

I finally found out: the dialog between the nvidia driver or module reports that the laptop display has "0.0 MHz maximum pixel clock", which invalidates all available modes for that display and forces to backoff to nvidia-default-mode, i.e., 800x600. The screen probably can't be used at that resolution, and displays a shifted white rectangle, then garbled color patterns:

[/var/log/Xorg.0.log]
Code:
(--) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA Default Flat Panel (DFP-0): 0.0 MHz maximum pixel
(--) NVIDIA(0): clock
The nvidia README file (thanks to nvidia for providing this documentation) documents a NoMaxPClkCheck option which precisely disables checking the pixel clock parameter. Setting it with:
Code:
    Option "ModeValidation" "DFP-0: NoMaxPClkCheck"
solved the problem !

[/var/log/Xorg.0.log]
Code:
(--) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA Default Flat Panel (DFP-0): 0.0 MHz maximum pixel
(--) NVIDIA(0): clock
(--) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA Default Flat Panel (DFP-0): Internal Single Link
 LVDS
(II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Validation Overrides for NVIDIA Default Flat Panel
(II) NVIDIA(0): (DFP-0):
(II) NVIDIA(0): NoMaxPClkCheck
(II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Devices: CRT-0, DFP-0
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1024x768,1024x768"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "1024x768,NULL"
(II) NVIDIA(0): "NULL,1024x768"
(I am using here both internal and external screen, with a Clone configuration).

To be more complete: I also inserted
Code:
options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=4
into both /etc/modprobe.preload.d/nvidia.conf and /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf, but I am not sure any of them are actually used/useful.

In summary: with NoMaxPClkCheck, the internal display works fine with nvidia-8774. I am not currently using xgl+compiz or beryl (xgl+compiz worked fine on the external display before I tested many things, including setting xgl=no and compiz=no respectively in /etc/sysconfig/{xgl,compiz}). I will try that later...

I was able to resolve the black screen problem with the 9629 driver on my Toshiba Satellite (GeForce4 460 Go) by adding Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP" to the Device section.

I pulled my hair out for a while on this one.
Hope this helps.

Any others advice or solution on this black screen issue with GeForce4 440 Go on Dell Inspiron 8200 & Latitude C840? As for xorg.conf is no change, its work on 8776 but not 9xxx driver. Thanks in advance.

Too bad this does not work for everyone.
