Angry opengl broken after livna nvidia driver update

I performed a fresh install of fedora core 6, the nvidia drivers installed were the nvidia BETA drivers from linva.org. Everything seemed fine, opengl worked, compiz worked. I upgraded the nvidia driver after being prompted to by pup and doing so and opengl broke. I tried a full system reinstall and cant even get back to the original setup.

glxgears, glxinfo, etc crashes X.

The graphics card is a Geforce 4 ti 4200 128MB.
I have I have tried the legacy drivers and opengl apps dont crash X but segfault trying to get an RBG visual.

so I have the latest drivers (which when I had the beta drivers installed worked)
drivers installed: rpm -qa --qf "%{N} %{V} %{R}\n" | egrep "nvidia"
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia 1.0.9629 1.lvn6
kmod-nvidia 1.0.9629 1.2.6.18_1.2798.fc6

kernel: 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 #1 SMP Mon Oct 16 14:37:32 EDT 2006 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

I don't have an SMP machine but installing kernel rpms installs the SMP version???

xorg.conf:

there are no (EE) errors in the Xorg.0.log

I would appreciate any help,

Hi,
i have the same problem: with 9625 everything worked fine, glxgears, compiz desktop effects, etc...After upgrading to 9629 glxgears gives segfault and when I try to enable the desktop effects (compiz) X crashes.
I started X with startx -- -logverbose 6 and attached is the nvidia-bug-report.
Thanks,
Andrei

Added nvidia-log-report2 that is generated after the X crash. Maybe we need a kernel update?

Hi,
the only thing that I notice in the nvidia-bug-log are some entries about an API mismatch :

Nov 9 07:47:36 localhost kernel: NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 1.0-9629, but
Nov 9 07:47:36 localhost kernel: NVRM: this kernel module has the version 1.0-9626. Please
Nov 9 07:47:36 localhost kernel: NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver
Nov 9 07:47:36 localhost kernel: NVRM: components have the same version.

Do you have the same thing in your logs linuxownz?

Andrei

You need to shut down X, and rmmod nvidia. modprobe nvidia and restart X and all should be fine.

else reboot.

linuxownz,
This is a known bug that impacts NV2x GPUs, and will be resolved in the next driver release. For now you'll need to downgrade to 1.0-9626 or 1.0-8776.

Thanks,
Lonni

Thumbs down Re: opengl broken after livna nvidia driver update

Thanks for the replies,
It is getting worse. Now I am at 800X600 like others who have posted. The video card/monitor is not being detected. (I have been reinstalling, adjusting, etc, ...)

Not sure where I am wrt this stuff anymore...

-------------------------------------------
2.6.18-1.2798.fc6 i686
kernel 2.6.18 1.2798.fc6
kernel-headers 2.6.18 1.2798.fc6
kmod-nvidia-legacy 1.0.7184 3.2.6.18_1.2798.fc6
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-legacy 1.0.7184 2.lvn6
------------------------------------------------

xorg.log complains of composite extension

Just want to get back to working config with fully accelerated opengl, not worried about compiz (but it was nice!!! while it lasted)

You suggested for me to downgrade to 1.0-9626 or 1.0-8776, but shouldn't I be using the legacy drivers for my 4200? If I must, were can I get these drivers?

Is it possible to point me to a resource that will allow me to confirm my installation?
Show me it is correct with the correct drivers in right places and the config file(s) adjusted accordingly?

thanks

There are currently two different 'legacy' driver branches. The 'original' (currently at 1.0-7184) and the 'new' (currently at 1.0-9629). The new legacy branch is for all GPUs older than NV3x, yet not currently considered legacy in the original legacy branch. Your 4200 is fully supported in 1.0-96xx. Sorry for the confusion.

Nov 10 19:20:21 Installed: kmod-nvidia.i686 1.0.9629-1.2.6.18_1.2798.fc6
Nov 10 19:20:24 Installed: xorg-x11-drv-nvidia.i386 1.0.9629-1.lvn6
Nov 10 19:20:24 Erased: xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-legacy

800X600
errors about mismatches
gnome-config-display has stopped working
monitor and card not detected

What are the steps I need to follow to correct this?

thanks

I'm afraid that I can't help with distribution specific driver (re)packaging. You should either contact the Livna folks, or remove their packages and use the official driver package from NVIDIA's website.

Also, I wouldn't expect gnome-config-display to work with the nvidia driver, as it is unaware of its existence.

Thanks,
Lonni

I use the distro packages because I could not get the nvidia official installer to run. would fail on compile

I havent tried following through with that issue as most sites I have read suggest to use the livna repo

Do you have advice, link to getting the official drivers working?

thanks

The driver README explains how to install the driver.

I installed the official drivers from the nvidia site NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9629-pkg1.run. I can get regular resolution and refresh rates. But still no accelerated gl. I tried the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8776-pkg1.run driver install but the compile fails.

glxgears segfaults. I can find no errors anywhere regarding the installation

going to try installing the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9626-pkg1.run installer
