Question Gaming on 1280x720 projector..8800gtx plenty?

Hi everyone been a LOONG time since I posted anything here. I game on a panasonic AX100 LCD projector with a resolution of 1280x720. It is on a 110" screen and boy does it look amazingly sweet. Right now I'm typing this lying on my recliner with a wireless keyboard and mouse and everything's clearer than a pc monitor(the way the fixed frame screen is it looks like an hdtv sticking out of my wall..looks really sweet)...anyways my pc's specs are in my sig.
I am using a 7900gx2 and I still get pretty bad lag in games like Tomb Raider Legend and Oblivion. I don't really want to upgrade my cpu right now or go to Windows Vista until next year. I am kinda tired of SLI and at 1280x720 I'm wondering how much overkill an 8800gtx would be. I was going to wait for the newer cards but there are games I want to play now smooth as butter(and for me smooth means always above 30fps.)
Would getting an 8800 be plenty of overkill for such a low rez as 1280? I only want 4x FSAA and of course 16x aniso. I hear people still complaining about framerates on their 8800's and I'm hoping that is just because they game at such high resolutions. I wanna hang on to my 4800cpu till later(new Intel cpu means 4 gigs of ddr2 ram for me as well). Are games right now cpu limited enough where the framerate will tank below 30fps? I don't care about 200FPS I just don't want chugging. I run with vsync off too and I don't get any tearing on my monitor.

also..is the anistropic filtering really much better on the 8800 that the 7900s? I kinda hate the way it's gotten grainy lately and it really shows on a big screen? Does the 8800 do it really smooth like they say? I want to know from here from people that did upgrade.

The 8xxx series AF is much improved over my old 6800GT, I can tell you that much.

With a proper CPU a 8800GTX is much more than you need for 720p resolution. You'd be future proofing a bit.

oh boy just got excited and bit the bullet...got this http://e3wwwtest.newegg.com/Product/...82E16814130090
with no payments for 6 months..why not? I have no debt of any kind and a bunch in the bank..haven't splurged in about a year.
I hope my 4800x2 xpu has enough juice for the games I play..I just don't feel like doing an overhaul when everything in my pc is properly configured..

That CPU should be fine for awhile longer. I'm still running ok on my 3800.

Legend runs great. Next gen mode and the 8800GTX were made for each other.

Pfft....I have yet to find any game that doesn't run decently on my rig at 1920x1080 with max settings (FSAA is off though; I find it rather pointless as it doesn't really add anything to resolutions this high.)

YAAYY!! I thought there was no way that game could run smoothly. I played it on the 360 a little and it doesn't even run that great on that. I guess an this new 8800 ultra will be a great upgrade for me.

wow! Put in my new 8800 ultra in this old rig yesterday and boy did it get a kick in the pants! TRL and Oblivion aren't even making the card sweat especially at a meager 1280x720 with 4x FSAA and 16x aniso.. Plus the anistropic filtering looks sooo much better! Even with ops on it doesn't shimmer but I run with opts off just for the hell of it since it's not affecting my performance. I have no problems with this card at all and I feel better about waiting to upgrade my cpu now since everything seems to run so well.
I even installed winows vista ultimate yesterday on another HD and am dual booting and it runs great. No problems really at all out of it. Got all my drivers etc running smoothly and I like it. Played Lost Planet Directx10 demo and it ran pretty well I think considering that it's beta and all the crap going on in the game. Ran it at 4x/16x and it was alright with me.
Think I'm gonna go all out on a cpu upgrade after Christmas bonus.. for now I can actually just enjoy my the games I have at perfect image quality. Damn it all looks good.
