Default Geforce 6200, no success with nv or nvidia driver.

My trying to get my new 6200 card to work properly.
But it wont!
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 6200 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.: Unknown device 81c7
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 177
Memory at 00000000fd000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
Memory at 00000000c0000000 (32-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
Memory at 00000000fc000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
Expansion ROM at 00000000fe8e0000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [60] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [44] AGP version 3.0
It starts with the nv drivers in Xorg 6.8.2 (amd64) in a suse environment,
But it thinks it's 1280x1024 but its a samsung 204ts
bash# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep Panel
(--) NV(0): Panel size is 1280 x 1024
(II) NV(0): Panel is TMDS

And it refuses to use 1600x1200:
(II) NV(0): Mode "1600x1200" is larger than BIOS programmed panel size of 1280 x 1024. Removing.
(II) NV(0): Not using mode "1600x1200" (unknown reason)

The old geforce3 did work until it died...

So, I whent in to the driver downloaded from nvidia.
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8774-pkg2.run

But the scripts sucks bigtime. I wrap strange, it removes spaces and dont scroll
so there is no way to know what you are doing and reply correct to the questions.
But at least I got a proper kernel module. But when I try to us the new driver
the X-server starts to loop using 100 percent CPU and blinking.
With the NV driver I can at least use it. The card is working perfect in XP environment.

Any ideas what to do? In what terminal are the installation working? I have tryed it on linux console, xterm, gnome-term. Exactly the same problem with the user interface.

A update with the nvidia driver.
This logs are from the xserver started with
"sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia"
It don't show any useful information on the screen.
When starting sax2 it waits a short time, the screen detects a "DPMS" off
and starts blink. And after a minute or so it starts again and the screen
blinks with a grey random patter screen and a white screen. And the CPU
goes wilde.

If this problem persists with the 1.0-9625 beta driver, please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,
Lonni

Ok. Some results with the beta driver. Same results. The 6200 card don't
work and the geforce3 card now as f**ked up colurs.
The X-server hangs and use a 99.9% cpu. The nvidia bug is from
the sax2 -r -m nvidia=0 command running.

You might want to read the driver README or this sticky post:

Please answer the following:
0) Does this problem reproduce with an official SuSE or kernel.org kernel?
1) Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?
2) If you disable the vesafb, does that help?
3) If you boot with the acpi=off and/or noapic kernel parameters, does that help?
4) If you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf, does that help?

Thanks,
Lonni

i am having nearly or exactly the same problem:
i am running Suse 10.1 freshly installed from the mid-October remastered source.
the kernel is 2.6.16.21-0.25-default
cpu is AMD64, graphics card is GeForce 6200. the mobo is brand new with the latest bios.
all works fine with the nv driver.

i have installed the nvidia driver from NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-9629-pkg2.run. i have also tried using the tiny-installer. in each case the compiling and installation proceed without difficulty, but upon starting X my screen goes black. when i ssh in i find that X has grabbed 95% or more of the cpu.

i have tried booting with acpi=off and with the glx line commented out of xorg.conf. results are the same as before in each case. i do not have a line referring to NvAGP in xorg.conf so do not know how to do that experiment. in version with the glx line removed i managed to run nvidia-bug-report successfully. results attached. i would appreciate any advice or suggestions on how to go from here. thanks.
