Default Problem with TwinView: CRT has completely wrong resolution

Dear forum,

I'd like to configure TwinView with a GeForce 6200 LE on X.org on Debian. According to Xorg.0.log, there are no problems in EDID recognition of the CRT and the DFP monitor (both TFT).
But on the CRT port, the monitor comes up with 640x480@75Hz, and it strugles with displaying something properly ... I can barely read what it shows, it's a completely wrong resolution and the monitor auto-detection can't get along with it ...

Please see my nvidia-bug-report.log for details.

Thank you!

Thomas

According to your bug report, X is running 1280x1024 on both displays. How are you determining that it is not?

Also, is there a reason why you're using the ConnectedMonitor option?

Thanks,
Lonni

Hi Lonni,

thanks for your quick response.

Yes, indeed the report shows that - but simply by looking at the CRT connected monitor I see that it is not.

I use the ConnectedMonitor option to avoid the driver being "disturbed" by the TV output which is not connected but has showed up on former logs.

Regards,
Thomas

If this reproduces without the ConnectedMonitor option, please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 5

and then generate a new bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni

Unfortunately, it does ...

Please see the new bug report.

Thanks!

I'm not seeing anything in the bug report that would explain this behavior. I have a few more questions:
0) Does this problem also occur without Twinview (either with the CRT as the only display in X, or with separate X screens)?
1) Does the 'nv' X driver work properly on this CRT?
2) Does this problem persist with the 1.0-9742 beta driver?

Thanks,
Lonni

Yes, it does. (Just with the CRT as the only display.)

I didn't try so far because its dual head capabilities are not sufficient for me ... but if I simply use now "nv" instead of "nvidia" and comment out all "Options" in the device section, I get two flickering screens but no useful picture at all.
Would it help to diagnose my problem by debugging this case further?

Yes ...

It sounds like your CRT isn't behaving as desired with any X driver. I'm starting to wonder if the problem is your CRT. Have you been able to get it to work properly under any circumstances?

Yes, I used it before, it's actually an old TFT screen which is connected to the CRT port.

But with your idea: I switched the display cables, so the former DFP is now connected to the CRT port and vice versa - for whatever reason: It works!

This is not a solution to the problem, but a pretty good workaround.

If you are interested in further debugging, let's continue - but for me, it's ok with that.

Thank you Lonni for your support!

Best regards,
Thomas

The fact that swapping the cables fixed the problem suggests that this is a problem with the cables/hardware, and not a driver issue. I think the current solution is the best that is possible under the circumstances.

Thanks,
Lonni
