Default Weird performance issue with glxgears

Hello,

I have a weird problem with compiz + glxgears. Compiz runs ultra-sweet with the new driver 177.80 and the suggested tweaks (pixmapplacement, glyphcache). No hitches, great framerate etc. But when I start glxgears, the whole system starts to struggle. For example when glxgears is running and I try to move another window, the movement is completely broken, with long pauses and hitches. This is periodical, it might be fine for a couple of seconds, then become slow for some time (couple of seconds) then ok again. Looks like there is a bottleneck somewhere? Or both CPUs reach 100%? If I turn Vsync on, it becomes very bad all the time.

BTW, Performance in opengl games is great (tested it with Warsow). Any ideas?

I use 177.80, 8800GT, 2.6.25 AMD64, Gentoo.

Yes. Screw GLXGears.

it has no purpose, so if it is broken: screw it.

No, this has nothing to do with GLXGears. GLXGears sucks as benchmark, but its a simple, normal OpenGL application.

The problem is that most consumer-grade OpenGL applications don't scale well. They are optimized for *ONE* running OpenGL application, in order to statisfy gamers.
I guess in that case GlxGears fills up large internal command buffers, and before a context siwtch to another opengl-process can happen the buffer has to be flushed.

Well, all I wanted to say is that he should screw GLXGears, as it is neither a benchmark nor he needs confirmation that 3d acceleration in general works for him, so it is useless.

So he should not even care why things are broken.
