As soon as I launch a game -- tried with enemy territory, ut2004 and rrracer (tux racer), the screen goes black and I find myself back in the gdm login prompt

I have a feeling this is exactly the same problem as I have, on my thread "xserver crashes when going full screen".
only I dont get the login screen. mine just keeps black. It happens though, with other full screen applications, like Stellarium... When i tried to switch to NV driver it worked fine, but of course with no GL capabilities.... but doing this told me at least that the problem is most likely with the driver.... sorry I don't have any more info, but im struggling to try and find the solution as well... Good luck. |

Happens to me with stellarium as well
- Does seem like a similar issue but with me it started happening since I upgraded to 1.0-9629, and in fact I did manage to run ut2004 a couple of times at very slow speeds before it started just killing X which made me think it was hardware related but downgrading fixes the problem.I have a 6800GT btw and also using ubuntu. |

I have exactly the same problem.
Kubuntu 6.10 with 7900Gt and 1.0-9629: glxgears gives ~15Kfps. Direct rendering yes. Startting OpenGL game is same thing as you press ALT+CTRL+BACKSPACE Kubuntu 6.10 with 7950GX2 and 1.0-9629: glxgears gives ~15Kfps. Direct rendering yes. Startting OpenGL game is same thing as you press ALT+CTRL+BACKSPACE And 1.0-9742 works with native opengl games, but have some errors in wine with opengl . BAD Draw GLX if i remember correctly. Now my solution is to go back to working driver... 1.0-9625. |

I hope this question doesn't show how new i am to linux, but, as i tried to downgrade i got a message, while restarting X, that the Nvidia kernel does not match the driver...
what is the full and correct way to downgrade? thanks. |

same crashing for me .. LFS-SVN-20061105. I've reverted back to the 7184 drivers and no crashes and all works correctly again.
9629 crashing x to console 8774 stopped crashing, but no longer having ability to fill screen with games running in non-native resolution for my LCD. 7184 fixed both of the above at a loss of about 700fps (7800 -> 7000) on my 6600gt just tried the 9742 and q4 runs great, scaling works, etc + glxgears is up to 7500fps Last edited by seamuso; 11-18-06 at 10:56 AM. |

Same problem. If I uninstall and revert to NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8776-pkg1.run no problem. But NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9629-pkg1.run crashes the Xserver when I try to run the linux versions of doom3 or ut2004. No problem with glxgears though.
This is independent of gnome, kde, or anything else. I run these games using startx /home/user/bin/doom3 or startx /home/user/bin/ut2004 from runlevel 3; GDM, window managers, and none of the other clutter is running. Just the game and the Xserver. The distinctive bit is the: Backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x81) [0x80e53b1] 1: [0x256420] 2: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.so(_nv001255X+0x38) [0x2c75dc] 3: [0x89e4ae8] Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting in the console and in /var/log/Xorg.0.log I've attached the output nvidia-bug-report.sh |

This is a known bug in 1.0-9629 which occurs when a specific type of mode change occurs while using a DFP. This bug will be resolved in the next driver release. See the numerous other threads on this forum which have already discussed the issue for more information.
